Dynamic Processes Governing Lower-Tropospheric HDO/H 2 O Ratios as Observed from Space and Ground

Abstract: The hydrological cycle and its response to environmental variability such as temperature changes is of prime importance for climate reconstruction and prediction. We retrieved deuterated water/water (HDO/H2O) abundances using spaceborne absorption spectroscopy, providing an almost global perspective on the near-surface distribution of water vapor isotopologs. We observed an unexpectedly high HDO/H2O seasonality in the inner Sahel region, pointing to a strong isotopic depletion in the subsiding branch of the Ha… Show more

“…Our basic retrieval approach for δD largely follows retrievals from SCIAMACHY (e.g., Frankenberg et al, 2005aFrankenberg et al, , 2008Frankenberg et al, , 2009) using the IMAP-DOAS (Iterative Maximum a Posteriori-Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) algorithm (Frankenberg et al, 2005b) with instrument-specific adaptions and ECMWF meteorological data for pressure, temperature and a priori humidity profiles. CO 2 is the only interfering species, and the disk-integrated solar line-list is adapted from the full-physics CO 2 retrievals used for GOSAT (originally developed for TCCON retrievals).…”

“…It is also spatially sparse and discontinuous in time as it relies on rainy days. The SCIAMACHY instrument onboard the European research satellite Envisat was the first instrument to provide global retrievals of water isotopes with high sensitivity near the ground (Frankenberg et al, 2009). Such retrievals open the possibility of exploiting the potential of water isotopes to better understand the lower tropospheric water budget, such as the role of continental recycling or convection in this budget (Risi et al, 2010).…”

“…Tropospheric profile measurements have already been reported from ground and space by means of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy or other techniques (Kuang et al, 2003;Zakharov et al, 2004;Worden et al, 2006;Frankenberg et al, 2009; Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union. “…As suggested by other studies [8][9][10] , rainfall during HS1 and the YD likely also increased in the western parts of the Zambezi catchment. However, plant waxes derived from these more inland parts would carry a much more depleted δD signal due to increased moisture rainout during long-distance transport 29 . We thus infer that longdistance transport of plant waxes by the Zambezi River is of minor importance.…”
