Hysteresis is a property of systems that do not instantly follow the forces applied to them, but react slowly, or do not return completely to their original state. A velocity based active vibration control, along with a special class of hysteretic models using passive functions are presented in this paper. This hysteretic model is based on a modification of the Bouc–Wen model, where a nonlinear term is replaced by a passive function. The proposed class retains the rate-independence property of the original Bouc–Wen model, and it is able to reproduce several kinds of hysteretic loops that cannot be reproduced with the original Bouc–Wen model. Using this class of hysteretic models, a chattering velocity-based active vibration control scheme is developed to mitigate seismic perturbations on hysteretic base-isolated structures. Our hysteretic model is used because of its simplicity in proving the stability of the closed-loop system; i.e., a controller is designed using the proposed model, and its performance is tested on the original hysteretic system, modeled with Bouc–Wen. Piezo-actuated displacement stage is often used to perform periodic scanning tasks, but the conventional control schemes may not satisfactorily track periodic reference signals. Our solution is a disturbance rejection proportional-integral-derivative (DR-PID)-based repetitive control (RC) scheme in which the hysteresis nonlinearity with the same period of reference input can be well suppressed by RC law. Stability criterions for the closed-loop system are developed based on small-gain theorem. A simple and effective design algorithm is obtained based on the stability conditions, such that DR-PID and RC can be designed separately. Finally, the validation and superiority of the proposed method are demonstrated by simulation studies.

As an important component of Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM), a piezo-scanner exhibits some undesired nonlinear characteristics, among which the inherent hysteresis largely decreases positioning accuracy during scanning and nano-manipulation process. To alleviate this problem, an image-based approach is proposed in this paper to model and then compensate for the hysteresis behavior of the piezo-scanner. Specifically, some scanning images over standard samples are utilized to identify the parameters of the classical Preisach model (CPM) of hysteresis. On the basis of the obtained model, an inversion-based technique is adopted to design a compensator for the hysteresis of the piezo-scanner. The proposed algorithm presents such advantages as low cost and little complexity since no nanoscale position sensor is required to collect identification data. Some scanning and nano-imprinting results are included to demonstrate the performance of the proposed strategy.
