Dynamic response of vertically loaded helical and driven steel piles

Abstract: The dynamic performance of helical piles is of significant interest because such piles can offer an efficient alternative to conventional piling systems in many applications where the foundation is subjected to dynamic loads. This paper presents the results of full-scale dynamic vertical load tests on a 9.0 m double-helix, large-capacity helical pile and a driven steel pile of the same length and shaft geometry. Comparing the results is considered necessary to evaluate, qualitatively and quantitatively, the dy… Show more

“…The boundary zone parameters of the weakened zone are adjusted based on the literature (Elkasabgy and El Naggar 2013;Han and Novak 1988;Manna and Baidya 2009;Vaziri and Han 1992) so that theoretical response curves approach towards dynamic test curves. However, there is no specific guideline available in the literature to estimate the actual value of nonlinear parameters for different levels of eccentric moment with depth and soil conditions.…”

“…Similar types of experiments were done by Burr et al (1997) on various small-scale soil-pile setups in varying soil layers to study the influence of soil-pile spacing to diameter ratio on the nonlinear response of piles. Further, these dynamic results are studied under harmonic vibration and analytically with the use of the continuum approach method by Elkasabgy and El Naggar (2013) and Sinha et al (2015) to know the effect on soil nonlinearity subjected to dynamic excitation and the combined soil-pile responses in terms of frequency and amplitude and their influence on impedance parameters. Some other researchers (Elkasabgy and Naggar 2018;Biswas and Manna 2018;Ralli et al 2022;Kumar et al 2022) also worked in this area and did experimental field and laboratory tests on different setups and compared their datasets with the theoretical curves measured from the continuum approach.…”

“…Several analytical models have been proposed to discuss the longitudinal dynamic characteristics of soil-pile interaction system [7][8][9]. The Winkler model has been widely used due to its convenience, in which the soil is simplified into a series of spring-dashpot elements [10][11][12].…”
