Dynamic spectrum sharing in cognitive radio networks using truthful mechanisms and virtual currency

Abstract: In cognitive radio networks, there are scenarios where secondary users (SUs) utilize opportunistically the spectrum originally allocated to primary users (PUs). The spectrum resources available to SUs fluctuates over time due to PUs activity, SUs mobility and competition between SUs. In order to utilize these resources efficiently spectrum sharing techniques need to be implemented. In this paper we present an approach based on game-theoretical mechanism design for dynamic spectrum sharing. Each time a channel … Show more

“…Despite that idea, achieving real time operation in complex auction models is a hot topic in spectrum trading research [24,57,97]. This is due to the fact that optimality is still in the spotlight, as pointed out in [24]: ''The decentralized approach has several advantages that make it attractive: lower complexity than the centralized approach, robustness and scalability. However, with decentralized approaches there is no guarantee that optimal solutions can be achieved.…”

“…It just increases the sum of the utilities but that does not imply an equal contribution from each. That clearly has an effect on the motivation of the entities and it has been studied by multiple works like [21][22][23][24]. Social welfare with a fairness consideration could be seen as optimizing the usage of spectrum for the benefit of the whole community and therefore, it would be the objective to be pursued by the regulator authorities.…”

“…For instance, the work in [8] proposes a pricing mechanism to avoid the congestion due to massive Machine Type Communication (MTC) accesses, increasing the price of the service when the network usage increases. Reference [9] proposes a model where a centralized system is implemented to control the channel sharing in cognitive radio networks based on a credits system and how this mechanism allows to achieve different sharing objectives.…”
