Abstract:Structural colour occurs when nanoscale structures interfere with incident light transmission and reflect particular wavelengths. The brown alga Ericaria selaginoides (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) has an opalescent photonic crystal anatomy that creates the blue colour of this seaweed but which responds to light, leading to speculation that the crystals have a photosynthetic role by modifying light transmission. Here, we characterize the colour response of E. selaginoides using time-lapse photography to capture respo… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
