Factors That Boost the Technological Capability of Malaysian Food Manufacturing Industry

The increasing urbanization of the world has created new issues and challenges for the modern food industry to meet customers’ changing demands. To address these issues, these firms need to invest in technological capability development. This study examines factors that affect the technological capability of food manufacturing firms. A large-scale survey of a sample of 270 food manufacturing firms in Malaysia was conducted. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the observed variables. The result shows that organizational innovation fully mediates the relationship between organizational learning and technological capability. Overall, the findings suggest that food manufacturing firms in Malaysia that want to enhance their technological capability should focus on developing and implementing organizational innovation practices, in addition to other strategies and practices that aim to promote organizational learning and innovation. This research contributes to the development of related theories and has practical implications for the stakeholders in the food manufacturing industry.

Building technological capability (TC) is a long-term process that must be planned carefully to achieve the desired results. Therefore, companies should increase their effort to maintain technological interactions with other companies and gain competitive advantages. This study aims to review the literature in the field of TC and provide a conceptual framework that highlights the relationship among TC, competitive advantage and manufacturing performance. After reviewing the literature, the researcher found that TC plays an important role in achieving competitive advantage for any company and improving the performance of companies. In addition, most previous studies have focused on TC in manufacturing companies probably due to the fact that manufacturing is currently an extremely important industry in the economy of most countries. TC strongly participates in the production and operation sectors, which are the cornerstones of every manufacturing company. Focusing on TC will play a role in developing the performance of manufacturing companies while gaining competitive advantages and maintaining commercial success in domestic and international markets.

Nowadays, technological innovation capabilities support competitive advantage, and the survival and development of modern organizations accordingly depend on the knowledge and applications of such innovations. Nevertheless, the link between various aspects of the dynamic technological capability of many organizations is not still clear. Meanwhile, the new trend of some research in the field of dynamic capabilities refers to its technological foundations, as a platform for strengthening and creating a competitive technological advantage in a scattered manner. In this regard, this paper systematically reviews the previous research on technological basis of dynamic capabilities using the systematic review approach, examining articles published during 2000–2021 in which the technological foundations of dynamic capabilities in terms of sensing, seizing, and deformation (i.e. cognitive, psychological and organizational) have been extracted. A framework for future research has also been presented. The recommended framework can partially bridge the gap in the literature on the technological foundations of dynamic capabilities in future studies and help the managers to identify the technological road map for gaining competitive technological advantages.
