Dynamical Crossover at the Liquid-Liquid Transformation of a Compressed Molten Alkali Metal

Abstract: Density-driven phase transformations are a known phenomenon in liquids. Pressure-driven transitions from an open low-density to a higher-density close-packed structure were observed for a number of systems. Here, we show a less intuitive, inverse behavior. We investigated the electronic, atomic, and dynamic structures of liquid Rb along an isothermal line at 573 K, at 1.2-27.4 GPa, by means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and inelastic x-ray scattering experiments. The excellent agreement of the si… Show more

“…63 and used for the case of liquid Li at ambient pressure and liquid Rb in a wide range of pressures. 49 Note that the existing methodology of the ab initio estimation of the adiabatic speed of sound for fluids via the numerical calculation of the Landau-Placzek ratio 67 is quite sophisticated and requires smooth dynamic structure factors S(k,ω) and a methodology how to separate contributions to the central and side peaks. In Fig.…”

“…47 So far, no studies have been performed to clarify how the pressure-induced changes in structure affect the collective dynamics in liquid metals. Only recently there appeared a report on a dynamical crossover in liquid Rb at pressures ∼13 GPa; 49 however, a detailed analysis of the spectra of collective excitations was not performed. For the case of solids, the studies of the phonon spectra at high pressures are of great interest, especially for iron at the earth's core pressures.…”

“…Here cðkÞ is the wavenumber-dependent ratio of specific heats which easily can be expressed via correlators used in the GCM approach [20,52]. To date this is the most precise methodology of calculations of adiabatic speed of sound from classical [35,48] and ab initio [53][54][55] simulations. A comparison of the calculated adiabatic speed of sound for supercritical Ar with the NIST database showed almost perfect agreement in the whole density range, see [48].…”
