“…Only two smaller studies have examined this role in Paget's disease of the vulva. The Shirahama et al study 20 found that E-cadherin was not expressed in their three cases of Paget's disease of the vulva, and Tada and coworkers 21 showed decreased expression of E-cadherin in their invasive Paget's disease of the vulva (four cases) compared with the in situ cases (four cases).…”

“…22,23 There is a paucity of information regarding expression of plakoglobin, E-cadherin and b-catenin in Paget's disease of the vulva and, as such, the role of these molecules has not been clearly established in Paget's disease of the vulva. 20,21,24 To our knowledge, only one study has examined the expression of plakoglobin in Paget's disease of the vulva. Tada et al 24 examined the expression of desmoglein I and plakoglobin in skin carcinomas, which included 11 cases of extramammary Paget's disease; only one case was from a female of which the location was documented as the pudendum.…”

“…31 Similarly, Liang et al 16 were revealed that the serum sE-cadherin in breast cancer patients were significantly higher than controls. Shirahama et al 32 indicated that the levels of serum sEcadherin did not vary significantly from controls in basal cell carcinoma. In colorectal patients, Velikova et al 33 determined that there was no statistically significant difference between sE-cadherin levels between controls and patients.…”

“…The Classic cadherins are crucial for normal tissue organization, especially for the arrangement and rearrangement of cells and cell layers. In the epidermis, there are 2 classic cadherins including E-cadherin, which is expressed on keratinocytes from all epidermal layers, and P-cadherin, which is restricted to the basal layer (Shirahama et al, 1996). These 2 cadherins are thought to play a pivotal role in the maintenance of the epidermal structure, based on the fact that monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) directed against E-and P-cadherin disturb the normal organization of mouse skin (Hirai et al, 1989) and the stratification of cultured keratinocytes (Wheelock and Jensen, 1992;Lewis et al, 1994).…”
