E‐cadherin loss and ΔNp73L expression in oral squamous cell carcinomas showing aggressive behavior

Abstract: This study shows that low E-cadherin expression is useful for predicting lymph node metastases in cases of OSCC. The predictive value is enhanced when low E-cadherin positivity is associated with DeltaNp63 and Delta Np73L expression.

“…Several studies show positive correlation between E-cadherin expression and nodal metastasis (Tanaka et al, 2003;Bosch et al, 2005;Foschini et al, 2008;Foschini et al, 2013) but others including our study, dispute this (Mahomed et al, 2007;Lopes et al, 2009;Mostaan et al, 2011;Ukpo et al, 2012;Rosado et al, 2013). “…Some authors propose that a low E-cadherin expression could predict lymph node metastasis in cases of human oral SCC, while others relate it to tumor differentiation. 11,13,16 Similar results were obtained in canine mammary tumors. 14,25,35 Our findings suggest that there is an association between p63 and E-cadherin expression and tumor grade.…”

“…Invasive carcinomas, in addition, showed in 12 cases one of the two or both short isoforms (ΔNp73L and d4TAp63, lacking exon 4) paralleling the results obtained in salivary gland carcinomas [9] and squamous cell carcinomas of oral cavity [6,9,22] where ΔNp73L isoform was not found in normal salivary gland tissue [9] and in non-neoplastic squamous oral mucosa [6]. Moreover, the expression of ΔNp73L has been found to be associated to low expression of E-cadherin, an association predictive of development of lymph node metastases in oral squamous cell carcinomas [22].…”
