EANM procedure guidelines for brain neurotransmission SPECT using 123I-labelled dopamine transporter ligands, version 2

Abstract: These guidelines summarize the current views of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine Neuroimaging Committee (ENC). The aim of the guidelines is to assist nuclear medicine practitioners when making recommendations, performing, interpreting, and reporting the results of clinical dopamine transporter (DAT) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies using (123)I-labelled radiopharmaceuticals. The aim is to achieve a high-quality standard of DAT SPECT imaging, which will increase the diagnos… Show more

“…In accordance with European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) procedural guidelines (Darcourt et al, 2010), intravenous injection of 123I-FP-CIT (DaTscan, 185 MBq; GE Healthcare, Chicago, IL, USA) was performed 30 min after thyroid blockade (oral potassium perchlorate, 400 mg). SPECT was then performed, using a dual-head gamma camera system (E.CAM; Siemens Medical Solutions, Malvern, PA, USA) equipped with high-resolution, low-energy, parallel-hole collimators.…”

“…SPECT was then performed, using a dual-head gamma camera system (E.CAM; Siemens Medical Solutions, Malvern, PA, USA) equipped with high-resolution, low-energy, parallel-hole collimators. Standard parameters were utilized for data acquisition and reconstruction (Darcourt et al, 2010), reorienting transaxial, sagittal and coronal slices in the fronto-occipital plane. Two experienced nuclear medicine physicians interpreted the resulting views as normal or abnormal by combining qualitative assessment with semi-quantitative BasGan v2 freeware-assisted evaluation (Calvini et al, 2007).…”

“…The length of the list of criteria of appropriate use is, however, relatively modest, in comparison to similar lists of potential indications published in guidelines on imaging of the dopaminergic system, cerebral perfusion or [ 18 F]FDG PET that we published on behalf of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine Neuroimaging (EANM) [26][27][28][29]. However, one should be aware of the fact that the published AIT appropriateness criteria are not a guideline.…”

“…Nuclear medicine guidelines follow a standardized format which include AUC, but also address technical procedures, how to read images optimally, reporting of images, safety aspects, etc. [26][27][28][29]31]. Both the SNMMI and the EANM agreed that the review process of guidelines should also be standardized [31].…”
