Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system (CNS), in which axonal damage is a deteriorative factor. Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is described as a neuronal-survival gene, also capable of exerting pleiotropic effects on the immune cells. Here, we aimed to investigate expression levels of BDNF and its antisense RNA, BDNF-AS, in Iranian MS patients. Our case-control study was based on collecting 50 whole blood samples of relapsing-remitting MS patients and 50 healthy controls. Then, expression analysis of BDNF and BDNF-AS was performed by Real-time quantitative PCR. We found a strong and positive correlation between BDNF and BDNF-AS in MS patients. This is while no significant difference in BDNF and BDNF-AS expression levels was seen between MS patients and controls (p>0.05). A significant and strong positive correlation was found between the expression levels of BDNF-AS and BDNF (r=0.785, p<0.0001). Further, significant positive moderate correlations of BDNF and BDNF-AS with other lncRNAs (GSTT1-AS1 and IFNG-AS1) and genes (TNF and IFNG) were revealed (p<0.0001). Additionally, there was no correlation between the BDNF and BDNF-AS expressions and disease duration, age at onset, and Expanded Disability Status Scale of Kurtzke (EDSS) (p>0.05). BDNF and BDNF-AS expression levels revealed insignificant discrepancies in patients and controls. We found a strong and positive correlation between BDNF and BDNF-AS in MS patients, which is, based on previous studies, a quit novel finding and can be further discussed by future works to unravel its possible application in MS. We suggest evaluation of different leukocytes subsets separately along with large cohort studies comprising a higher number of individuals from different ages to unravel the effects of other possible aspects.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disabling neurological disorder, which in addition to neuro-motor disorders, accompanies a variety of symptoms, such as anxiety, asthenia, and reduced levels of problem-solving, and leads to a number of physical and mental disorders. This is while rumination is among psychological problems that can negatively affect MS patients' mental health. Rumination is known as a permanent engagement in a thought or an issue and is categorized as a conscious thought focused on a specific topic. Objectives: This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction group therapy in rumination among MS patients Methods: This quasi-experimental study was followed by a pretest, post-test, and follow-up design with a control group. The current study had a statistical population including all patients with MS, who referred to Sistan and Baluchestan MS Community from December 2016 to February 2017. Among them, 30 patients were selected as the sample using the convenience sampling method and were randomly assigned to a control group and an experimental group (each including 15 patients). Eight 60-minute sessions of mindfulness-based stress reduction group therapy were conducted on the experimental group. A post-test was carried out after completing all sessions and a follow-up was performed a month later. Yousefi rumination scale was used as the data collection tool. An analysis of covariance was applied to analyze the obtained data. Results: The results indicated that mindfulness-based stress reduction group therapy reduced rumination in patients with MS in the post-test and follow-up (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Authorities are recommended to apply the mindfulness-based stress reduction group therapy to improve rumination among patients with chronic diseases.

Multiple Sclerosis: Perspectives in Treatment and Pathogenesis

More than 700,000 people suffer from multiple sclerosis (MS) in Europe. This implies that more than 1 million people are affected by this disease through their role as caregivers and family members. Given its relevant impact, MS deserves consideration by epidemiologists, clinicians, psychologists, social scientists and other scholars. Such interdisciplinarity is stressed in the present contribution, which focuses on various aspects of socioeconomic burden. Starting from considerations about the epidemiology of the disease in Europe, as outlined by the MS Barometer, a comparative survey based on data collected by the national MS societies and launched in 2008, a brief literature review for each European country mentioned in the report was carried out with the following key terms: "multiple sclerosis," "cost of illness," and "health-related quality of life (HRQoL)." The consideration of the level of assistance provided, the access to rehabilitation centers, and the availability of pharmacological treatments, Drugs, Costs and Quality of Life for MS Patients in Europe 18especially innovative therapies, reveal how there are still huge differences across Europe. Literature contributions are mostly oriented toward HRQoL studies and the impact of new pharmacological treatments. There are less studies focusing on compliance: this may be the consequence of a higher awareness of the disease among the patients and a strengthened cooperation with the physicians. Some suggestions about foreseeable and desirable lines of research conclude the contribution.
