“…In interpreting these results, it is also necessary to take into account that about half of the patients received oral caffeine during detoxification. Although BDNF is increased after caffeine administration to zebrafish whose embryos were previously treated with caffeine (Capiotti et al, 2011) or in caffeine-treated sleep-deprived rats (Alhaider et al, 2011), we did not find differences in BDNF serum levels between caffeine-and placebotreated abstinent cocaine addicts. This may be due to the predominance of cocaine withdrawal over the stimulant effects of caffeine, an antagonist of adenosine receptors, during the first two abstinence weeks.…”

“…Quantitative PCR was performed using SYBR ® Green I (Invitrogen) to detect double-strand cDNA synthesis. Reactions were done in a volume of 25 μL using 12.5 μL of diluted cDNA, containing SYBR ® Green I 0.2 times diluted (Invitrogen), 100 μM dNTP, 1× PCR buffer, 3 mM MgCl 2 , 0.25 U Platinum ® Taq DNA Polymerase (Invitrogen), and 200 nM of each reverse and forward primers (Table 1) [35][36][37][38]. The PCR cycling conditions were an initial polymerase activation step for 5 min at …”

“…Adult (<8 months old) male wild type zebrafish with Tuebingen background (Capiotti et al, 2011;Maximino, Lima, Olivera, Picanço-Diniz, & Herculano, 2011) were obtained from a local supplier (Redfish Agroloja, RS, Brazil). Animals were maintained in 20 L housing tanks, divided into six compartments and filled with tap water previously treated with Tetra's AquaSafe Ò (Blacksburg, VA) to neutralize chlorine, chloramines, and heavy metals present in the water that could be harmful to the fish.…”
