Early Identification of Language Delay by Direct Language Assessment or Parent Report?

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Objective: The goal of the study was to compare the accuracy and diagnostic power of a parent report measure and direct language assessment for early identification of children with language delay. Method: The parent language report and direct language measures were compared for 47 typically developing toddlers and 70 late-talking toddlers aged 24 to 26 months. “…32,33,42,43 Both studies examined the accuracy of the screener at 2 years in relation to the reference standard (a diagnostic tool) at both 2 years and 3 years. In the LDS study, 43 sensitivity for detecting a language delay at 3 years was 67% (91% at 2 years).…”

“…In accordance with other authors (Heilmann, Weismer, Evans, & Hollar, 2005;Sachse & von Suchodoletz, 2008), we defined a 2-year-old child as language delayed if she or he scored in at least one of the four standardized language subtests of the SETK-2 (Grimm, 2000), 1½ SD below the mean (i.e., T score of ≤ 35) and in at least one additional subtest 1 SD below the mean (i.e., T score of < 40). Recruitment strategy resulted in 25% of the children in the sample having a primary language delay at 24 months.…”

“…Estudos mais recentes (SACHSE; VON SUCHODOLETZ, 2008;RESCORLA et al, 2007) na área do Retardo de Linguagem têm valorizado o papel dos pais nas relações comunicativas e emocionais das crianças. Em relação ao nosso relato, tivemos interesse em estabelecer as implicações entre a dialogia preestabelecida desde muito cedo entre os pais e as crianças com Retardo de Linguagem.…”
