Early Intervention in Home in an Infant with Hemiparesis in a Rural Community

Abstract

Our objective was to describe a combined program of early intervention, characterized by the involvement of both the specialist and family through a home program in a case of infantile hemiparesis. We present an 8-month-old female patient, with right hemiparesis, who was successfully treated by a combined program of early intervention, which involved the participation of both the specialist and the mother. Because of the large distance between the center and home, mom was instructed to perform the rehabilitation exercises at home. Results show that the combined attention of intensive treatment every 3 months by a specialist and a daily home program performed regularly by the mother may be a viable alternative to address the lack of access to a conventional program of early intervention in infants from remote communities.
