Early modified gravity in light of the H0 tension and LSS data

Abstract: We present a model of early modified gravity (EMG) consisting in a scalar field σ with a nonminimal coupling to the Ricci curvature of the type M 2 pl þ ξσ 2 plus a cosmological constant and a small effective mass and demonstrate its ability to alleviate the H 0 tension while providing a good fit to cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) data. In this model the scalar field, frozen deep in the radiation era, grows around the redshift of matter-radiation equality b… Show more

“…Hence, the H 0 tension in this model is alleviated, but at the expense of worsening the S 8 /σ 8 one (Hill et al 2020;Ivanov et al 2020;D'Amico et al 2021). Something similar happens in the New EDE model proposed in (Niedermann & Sloth 2021 or the early modified gravity model studied in (Braglia et al 2021). Although the S 8 /σ 8 tension is not as statistically significant as the H 0 one (cf.…”

“…27 For this model, the combination of the Planck 2018 + BAO + FS + Pantheon + R19 + H0LiCOW datasets gives H 0 = 71.00 +0. 87 −0.79 km s −1 Mpc −1 at 68% CL [859], reducing the Hubble tension at 1.4σ with R20. The analysis already includes a Gaussian prior on H 0 .…”

“…Early modified gravity. The scenario described by the action in equation (102) with F(σ) = 1 + ξσ 2 and with the potential V(σ) = λσ 4 /4 (λ is a free parameter) has been recently studied in reference [859], where it has been named 'early modified gravity model'. 27 For this model, the combination of the Planck 2018 + BAO + FS + Pantheon + R19 + H0LiCOW datasets gives H 0 = 71.00 +0.…”

“…Here, we consider the so called Rock n Roll (RnR) model of Ref. [43] as representative of EDE (see [40,42,43,[60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67] for an incomplete list of EDE models). The Lagrangian is that of a minimally coupled, canonical scalar field φ:…”
