Early neonatal mortality is modulated by gestational age, birthweight and fetal heart rate abnormalities in the low resource setting in Tanzania – a five year review 2015–2019

Abstract: Background Early Neonatal mortality (ENM) (< 7 days) remains a significant problem in low resource settings. Birth asphyxia (BA), prematurity and presumed infection contribute significantly to ENM. The study objectives were to determine: first, the overall ENM rate as well as yearly ENM rate (ENMR) from 2015 to 2019; second, the influence of decreasing GA (< 37 weeks) and BW (< 2500 g) on ENM; third, the contribution of intrapartum and delivery room factors and in particular fetal hear… Show more

“…The included studies were either cross-sectional (n = 8), retrospective (n = 4) or prospective studies (n = 2) [ 5 , 8 , 17 – 28 ]. Of all studies five studies were conducted in Ethiopia [ 8 , 17 , 25 , 27 , 28 ], two in Nigeria [ 19 , 23 ], two in Ghana [ 5 , 21 ], two in Tanzania [ 22 , 26 ], one in Cameroon [ 18 ], one in Central Africa [ 20 ] and one in Malawi and Zambia [ 24 ]. All studies in this review were published in the year between 2009 and 2023.…”

“…The major outcome of this review is to estimate the pooled magnitude of early neonatal mortality in SSA countries. Early neonatal mortality rate is computed by dividing number of early neonatal deaths (within seven days of birth) by the total number of live births [ 9 ].…”
