Early Permian (Asselian) vegetation from a seasonally dry coast in western equatorial Pangea: Paleoecology and evolutionary significance

Abstract: Purpose/Objective: New definitions for some dosimetric parameters for use in quality assurance of flattening filter free (FFF) beams generated by medical linear accelerators have been suggested. The present study aims to validate these suggestions and to propose possible reference levels. Materials and Methods:The main characteristics of FFF photon beams were described in terms of: field size, penumbra, unflatness, slope and peak-position parameters. Data were collected for 6 and 10 MV-FFF beams from three dif… Show more

“…The presence of diagenetic halite (Fig. 6E) is an indirect proxy for saltier and drier conditions than have previously been attributed to the depositional environment and palaeoclimate of the Cedar Mesa, and is consistent with age-equivalent rocks elsewhere in western equatorial Pangea (Parrish, 1993;Kessler et al, 2001;Ricardi-Branco, 2008;Tabor et al, 2013;Falcon-Lang et al, 2015).…”

“…Evidence so far suggests that this group evolved in seasonally-dry habitats in extrabasinal areas in Euramerica where chances on being preserved were very small . The precocious glimpses of voltzian conifers in Tregiovo, and recently discovered voltzian-like conifers from a dry coastal setting of Asselian age (early Cisalurian) in New Mexico (Falcon-Lang et al, 2015), show that voltzian conifers were present in the landscape much earlier than previously thought.…”

“…S2e). Earlier possible occurrences in the Asselian, and possibly as far back as the Sakmarian of New Mexico, await confirmation from isolation of additional fossil material (Falcon-Lang et al, 2015;Falcon-Lang et al, 2016). The voltzian conifers are distinctly different from the walchians in the characteristics of their foliage and ovuliferous cones (or fertile cones).…”
