Early Permian transgressive–regressive cycles: Sequence stratigraphic reappraisal of the coal-bearing Barakar Formation, Raniganj Basin, India

Abstract: The present research is an attempt to assess the Barakar Formation of the Raniganj Gondwana Basin, India, in the frame of fluvio-marine (estuarine) depositional systems using sequence stratigraphic elements. Analysis of predominant facies associations signify deposition in three sub-environments: (i) a river-dominated bay-head delta zone in the inner estuary, with transition from braided fluvial channels (FA-B1) to tide-affected meandering fluvial channels and flood plains (FA-B2) in the basal part of the succ… Show more

“…The presence of tidal-bundles, mud-flaser in fine-grained sandstone/siltstone, sand lenses within mudstone as lenticular bedding and the existence of mud drapes in FA-I-1 manifest upward increase of the interactions of tidal currents in shallow tidal realm (B. Bhattacharya et al, , 2018Boersma, 1969;Bull & Cas, 1989;Coleman & Gagliano, 1965…”

“…4) include the large-scale trough crossstratified sandstone (facies 3A) and the planar crossstratified sandstone (facies 3B), which characteristically bear mud-draped foresets, and lateral accretion of ripple cross-sets with reactivation surfaces within channel-fill cross-stratified sandstone beds. Such signatures indicate tidal influence (Bhattacharya et al , 2018 within a fluvial-dominated fluvio-tidal depositional setting.…”

“…The Cenomanian Stage (98.9-93.5 Ma) provides a suitable window to study such changes, as high-resolution global correlations (100-400 kyr) in terms of sea-level changes and orbital cycles from marine successions revealed five major/minor eustatic events (KCe-1 to KCe-5 of Haq 2014). However, doubt persists regarding actual nature and effect of transgressions in shallow marine and continent-margin transitional depositional areas, and the role of climatic forcings, tectonism, and sedimentation in controlling palaeogeography and shaping resultant stratal stacking patterns (Bhattacharya et al 2018). High-resolution sequence-stratigraphic study backed by detailed sedimentary facies analysis is useful to understand the appropriate transitional relationship between fluvial and marine processes in terms of major transgressive-regressive cycles in response to tectonoeustatic changes in such basins (Bhattacharya et al 2018;Jaiswal et al 2018).…”

“…Compared with the meandering river delta, the braided river delta is more coarse-grained, with a greater lateral connectivity of the sand bodies and better storage performance. In recent years, an extensive amount of research has been performed on the sedimentary characteristics and depositional patterns of marine braided and meandering river deltas 8 12 , however, studies on the transformation mechanism and the controlling factors of the two kinds of the deltas are not sufficient yet 13 , 14 .…”
