Early Postural Changes in Individuals with Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease

Abstract: Background and Objectives. Postural changes are frequent and disabling complications of Parkinson's disease (PD). Many contributing factors have been evident either related to disease pathology or to adaptive changes. This study aimed at studying the postural changes in subjects with Parkinson's disease and its relation to duration of illness and disease severity. Methods. Eighteen patients with PD and 18 healthy matched volunteers represented the sample of the study. The patients were at stage 1 or 1.5 accord… Show more

“…We also explored the ability of the SOT and i-mCTSIB to identify individuals with subtle impairments as defined by Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) scores. 27,28 A score of 1 and 2 is indicative of mild postural instability while 3 and 4 indicates moderate postural instability, as defined by an abnormal stepping response to a backwards pull on the shoulders. Similarly, we examined the ability of SOT to identify individuals with impaired sway as defined by established cut scores (normal sway = > 69 and abnormal = ˂ 69).…”

“…Subject characteristics were included as features for modelling. Based on the measured raw data for distance C7-S1, c-spine, t-spine, and l-spine (see Figure 1), the feature kyphosis index (KI), flèche cervicale (FC), and flèche lombaire (FL) were calculated, as they are commonly used for posture evaluations [33,34]. Further, these calculated features were normalized by the distance between C7 and S1 (corresponding to the subjects' trunk heights) to allow better comparability between subjects (hereinafter abbreviated as KI%, FC%, and FL%).…”
