Early Precambrian Rocks in the Saganaga Lake-Northern Light Lake Area, Minnesota-Ontario Part I. Petrology and Structure

Abstract: The Precambrian rocks, older than 2,600 m.y., in the Saganaga Lake-Northern Light Lake area on the Minnesota-Ontario boundary include a thick succession of metavolcanic rocks, chiefly greenstone but with some intermediate to silicic types, and minor metasediments; the Northern Light Gneiss; the Saganaga Tonalite; alkalic syenodiorite and granodiorite; and the Knife Lake Group. A variety of dikes and sills in the older units are of different ages; the youngest are related to the Keweenawan igneous activity, app… Show more

“…The major element compositions of the two augen gneiss samples overlap with the compositions of 3.65 Ga old augen gneisses from the Itsaq gneiss complex (Nutman et al, 1984), representing an Fe-rich differentiated suite. Major element as well as some trace element and Sr isotope data for the Canadian TTGs can be found in Arth and Hanson (1975), Hanson et al (1971), Peterman et al (1972), and Goldich et al (1972).…”

“…The samples from the south of the Isua gneiss area are comparable in their composition to those described in Nutman et al (1999). The samples from the Superior Province (Canada) were used in the original work of Hanson et al (1971), Goldich et al (1972), Peterman et al (1972 and Arth and Hanson (1975) to characterize the general petrogenesis of TTGs. As described in detail in Goldich et al (1972) and Arth and Hanson (1975), they are also homogeneous tonalites.…”

“…Recent reports discussing these rocks include those of Card et a l . (1972) in Ontario, of Cannon & Simmons (1973), Gair & Thadden (1968), Bayley, Dutton, Lamey &Treves (1966), andJames, Clark, Lamey &Pcttijohn (1961) in Michigan, and of Arth & Hanson (1975), Goldich, Hanson, Hallford & Mudrey (1972), Hanson, Goldich, Arth & Yardley (1971), Peterman, Goldich, Hedge & Yardley (1972), and Sims & Morey (1972) in Minnesota and adjacent parts of Ontario. The most recent report covering the Archean rocks in northwestern Wisconsin is that of Aldrich (1929).…”
