Easy to Use Plastic Optical Fiber-Based Biosensor for Detection of Butanal

Abstract: The final goal of this work is to achieve a selective detection of butanal by the realization of a simple, small-size and low cost experimental approach. To this end, a porcine odorant-binding protein was used in connection with surface plasmon resonance transduction in a plastic optical fiber tool for the selective detection of butanal by a competitive assay. This allows to reduce the cost and the size of the sensing device and it offers the possibility to design a “Lab-on-a-chip” platform. The obtained resul… Show more

“…In this work, a new synthetic receptor, specifically designed to recognise C4 to C12 PFAs, is used with the same SPR-POF platform reaching a better LOD (130 ppt). This result could be considered of interest when compared to the detection limit of PFAs obtained by using different approaches, as reported in Oughena et al [ 25 ] and Trojanowicz et al [ 26 ] or Cennamo et al [ 27 ].…”

“…Furthermore, the DAS system based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) are very sensitive to small changes in refractive index of external media [126]. Therefore, oil spill alarm products based on SPR sensing technology can realize real-time detection of oil spill process [127], and the cost is low [128]. Therefore, SPR sensing technology has been widely used in the measurement and detection of related physical quantities, which will cause the change of refractive index [129].…”

“…Moreover, it provides reliable results when the ligand is a large molecule, such as a protein or DNA fragment, but is not very accurate in the case of a small organic compounds, as an odorant. A simplified system has been described, with an OBP immobilised on an optical fibre, that could lead to the fabrication of portable biosensors [90].…”
