Eco-efficient alkaline activated binders for manufacturing blocks and pedestrian pavers with low carbon footprint: Mechanical properties and LCA assessment

Abstract: This study proposes using two types of binders based on fly ash (FA) as primary raw material and a calcium source such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) or Portland cement (OPC) for the production of eco-efficient pre-fabricated materials. These binders are denoted FA/GBFS (70/30) and FA/OPC (80/20). A mix of commercial sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide was used as a traditional activator (SN), and the mix of rice husk ash (RHA) and NaOH as an alternative activator (RN). The results show the po… Show more

“…The final yield will depend on the thermodynamic driving force for the desired reaction to happen, and on the dissolution kinetics in alkaline media, which must be fast enough to take place in technologically feasible times. More specific information on the different types of precursors can be found in the references ( Ben Haha et al, 2011b ; Palomo et al, 2014 ; Abdullah et al, 2020 ; Khalifa et al, 2020 ; Mejía-Arcila et al, 2020 ; Rivera et al, 2020 ; Cheah et al, 2021 ).…”

“…A review of the state of the art of LCA for binders and asphalt mixtures has been previously made (31)(32)(33)(34)(35)(36), however, very few had evaluated different pavement rehabilitation strategies or the benefits of using MW-assisted healing technology. In any case, the are promising results according to the research made.…”

“…On the other hand, building materials have heterogeneous compositions and microstructures; therefore, they tolerate compositional variations in waste from different campaigns. In recent decades, several studies have focused on the reuse of waste as a raw material in the manufacture of different construction materials, such as various types of clinker [ 5 ], cement [ 6 , 7 , 8 ], mortars [ 9 ], concretes [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ], geopolymers [ 14 , 15 ], clay bricks [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ], ceramic tiles [ 21 , 22 ], and roof tiles [ 23 , 24 ].…”
