The consumption of colossal quantities of materials in the building industry has advanced the swift depletion of clean clay reserves. The use of organic additives in brick production is conserving clay resources. In addition, in some cases, it can lead to improvements in some material properties, such as decreasing thermal conductivity and increasing the capacity of the ceramic material in terms of thermal insulation. In the present investigation, waste millet husk (WMH) was incorporated in different proportions to clays to ascertain its influence on the fired brick properties. The raw materials were characterized for their physical, chemical, and thermal properties and found suitable for use in fired brick production. Additionally, the prepared modeled brick samples were tested for their physico-mechanical properties. The results indicated that linear shrinkage and weight loss increased, whereas bulk density decreased from 2.06 to 1.58 g/cm 3 depending on WMH incorporation amount in the clays and firing temperature. Similarly, compressive strength reduced by up to 68%. Thermal conductivity beneficially reduced by 42% with the addition of 16 wt.% of WMH. The best results in terms of mechanical properties were obtained with 4 wt.% of the WMH. In terms of thermal insulation, the best results were exhibited in the samples admixed with 16 wt.% of WMH. The results showed that porosity and bulk density were critical determining factors that directly influence the bricks physico-mechanical properties.

The article presents the results of research on the physical and radiological properties of building ceramics made of mining waste. One method of using mining waste is to use it as aggregate in road construction. However, this alone is not enough to dispose of the entire amount of waste generated. Another promising method of using mining waste is the production of building ceramics (bricks). However, some properties (e.g. the content of natural radionuclides) of the waste may limit the possibility of such use. In the scope of this work, the properties of bricks made from mining waste - shale collected from dumps, were examined. It has been shown that the properties of bricks prepared in this way meet the criteria set out in various standards and legal acts and can be used in construction.

Scarcity of raw materials, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and reduction of waste disposal in landfills are leading to the development of more sustainable building materials. Based on these lines, this work studies the incorporation of biomass bottom ashes into ceramic materials for brick manufacture, in order to reuse this currently unused waste and reduce clay extraction operations. To this end, different groups of samples were made with different combinations of clay and biomass bottom ashes, from 100% clay to 100% biomass bottom ashes. These samples were shaped, sintered and subjected to the usual physical tests in ceramics. In turn, the mechanical resistance, color and leaching of the contaminating elements present were studied. The physical and mechanical tests showed that the results of all the families were adequate, achieving compressive strengths of over 20 MPa and leaching of the contaminating elements acceptable by the regulations. Therefore, a sustainable range of ceramics was developed, with specific properties (porosity, density, resistance and color), with a waste that is currently unused and sustainable with the environment.
