INTRODUCTION:In this paper we discuss concepts and practices that point to a new field of ubiquitous music (ubimus) research centered on domestic settings. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this paper is to document and share a preliminary study of the use of taste as a trigger for creative decisions and a comparative study of creative music making done at home and in transitional settings. METHODS: Groundwork in this area encompasses the design, implementation and deployment of ubimus systems. Key aspects include sonic resources and metaphors for creative action based on multimodality. RESULTS: The results indicate that unpredictable sonic environments foster originality but may compromise the subjects' creative performance -reducing their level of engagement and fun and the possibilities for collaboration, while increasing the cognitive demands of the activity. Home seems to furnish a positive context as long as the objective is not to increase the originality of the outcomes. CONCLUSION: The effectiveness of taste as a scaffold for creative decisions was partially confirmed, demanding further studies. These results have implications for both the artistic aspects of sound making and the everyday usage of sound for distant socializing in domestic settings, posing renewed challenges to the ongoing STEAM initiatives.

A recent initiative within ubimus research contemplates the development of an internet of musical stuff (IoMuSt) as a concept that interacts with and expands the pre-existing rubric of the internet of musical things (IoMusT). Opposed to the ontological fixedness of things, stuff is pliable, fairly amorphous, changeable depending on usage, context-reliant, either persistent or volatile. It encompasses adaptable and flexible temporalities, featuring non-allotable, non-monetisable and non-reifiable resources. Furthermore, IoMuSt highlights the distinction between object and subject, blurring this crisp separation. The IoMuSt rubric is sustained by aesthetic pliability, fostering an expansion of creative practices and a critical stance towards utilitarian human-computer interaction perspectives. The authors discuss key dimensions of aesthetic pliability as related to flexible infrastructures, open sources and methods, enhanced collaboration and a low ecological footprint. The properties of aesthetic pliability are explored within the realm of two case studies.

We report the results of a study involving twenty subjects doing musical activities in transitional settings, supported by an ecology of tools based on the metaphor for creative action Sound Sphere. The Sound Sphere Ecology (SFS) is a set of web-based tools, loosely organized around audio mixing and processing tasks. It employs verbal strategies for knowledge transfer to provide support for lay participants and specialists. To understand how the stakeholders influence and are influenced by this design strategy, we carried out a series of experiments involving assessments of the participants' behaviours and of the sonic products during various creative musical tasks with SFS. The overall results were positive, indicating that the proposed metaphor provides effective support for casual interaction, highlighting the participants' level of engagement. As a downside, the assessments pointed to ease of use as the lowest and less consistent item among the rated creative factors. We discuss the implications of these results and propose various design enhancements to enable the usage of a larger pool of resources. Considering the heterogeneous profiles of casual stakeholders, methodological refinements are also proposed to assess the knowledge gained by the participants during the exploratory activities, while augmenting their ability to share knowledge. This is one of the first studies on creativity-action metaphors for casual interaction.
