Ecological Compensation: A Key to Sustainable Development in the Guizhou Province Karst Region, Southwest China

Abstract: The conflict between poverty and the resulting over-exploitation of natural resources on the one hand, and ecological restoration and sustainable development on the other hand, in the southwest China karst region was studied. In this region, the karst forest (a mixed evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved forest) is rapidly degrading due to over-exploitation (sloping farming). We suggest that an Ecological Compensation (EC) model should be established with: financial institutions, local people, and a third part … Show more

“…Then, people realize that the important role of this program in carbon fixation has become a hot spot of research (Ryan et al, 2010;Soares-Filho et al, 2010). Later, the ecosystem service value of this project and the restoration of forest vegetation have become the focus of attention (Santopuoli, 2012;Zhou, Svensson, Yan, Chen, & Li, 2014). Consequently, more people are paying close attention to how to quantitatively assess the impact of the NFCP on ecosystem services, how implementing the NFCP has changed ecosystem services, and the key drivers of the impact (Yu & Han, 2016).…”

“…Although it plays a very important role in people's lives, karst areas are vulnerable to disturbances from the undirected socioeconomic dynamics of the community. Limestone mining will change the landscape significantly and has the potential to damage the environment, the losses can even outweigh the benefits that can be obtained from mining activities; and to overcome the damage to karst areas, it takes decades of ecological compensation and very large costs (Zhou et al 2014).…”

“…Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian kompos kambing sebanyak 1,5 kg/m 2 dan penanaman kacang tanah dapat memberikan hasil yang nyata terhadap pertumbuhan rumput Gajah Kerdil (Pennisetum purpureum 'Mott' ) di lahan bekas penambangan batu kapur. (Zhou, 2014).…”
