SUMMARY1. Accurately assessing the effects of multiple human-caused stressors on freshwater (and other) ecosystems is an essential step in the development of efficient decision support tools for environmental managers. Our objective is to review potentials and limitations of the use of biological traits as indicators (BTIs) of multiple stressor effects on running water (i.e. lotic) ecosystems. 2. Pioneers in ecology provided mechanistic explanations for responses of alternative biological traits to a given stressor and for the action of habitat harshness as a trait filter. These ideas were subsequently integrated in theoretical ecological constructs (e.g. Habitat Templet Concept) that form the basis of the BTI approach. 3. To resolve the effects of multiple stressors on running waters requires multiple traits of a biologically diverse group of organisms such as lotic invertebrates. To meet this goal, however, recently created databases on the biological traits of lotic invertebrates must be expanded and unified. 4. Addressing the technical implementation of the BTI approach, we illustrate that anticipated problems with phylogenetic trait syndromes are seemingly less serious in reality and that presence-absence data of genera and few sample replicates are sufficient for accurate trait descriptions of invertebrate communities. 5. Current trends in politics demand that biomonitoring tools be effective at large scales, i.e. large-scale trait patterns of natural communities (i.e. at reference conditions) should be relatively stable. The trait composition of natural invertebrate communities is relatively stable at the scale of Europe and North America because trait filters of natural lotic habitats act similarly across large biogeographical units. 6. The mechanistic actions of stressors on the biological traits of invertebrates should facilitate a priori predictions, but the complexity of potential trait responses makes such predictions sometimes difficult. 7. To illustrate potentials and limitations of BTIs to identify a given stressor acting exclusively (or primarily), we examine the (i) use of functional feeding groups to indicate the action of various stressors and (ii) trait responses to an indirectly acting stressor (discharge variation) and to a more directly acting stressor (near-bottom flow). If the excessive use of specific traits for the indication of too many different stressors is avoided and a given stressor acts directly on traits as a priori predicted, reliable interpretations of trait responses can be achieved. Thus, the BTI approach has the potential to inaugurate a new era in the biomonitoring of lotic (and other) ecosystems.

We designed a field survey (the entire river length; not dammed: First and Second plateaus; dammed: Third Plateau) to test the hypothesis that the cascade of reservoirs promoted a reduction in species richness and changed the composition of Oligochaeta assemblage along the Iguaçu River. Changes in environmental variables and in richness and composition of Oligochaeta were summarized by Canonic Correspondence Analysis. Along the Iguaçu River, conductivity, and altitude decreased, whereas temperature increased. Oligochaeta composition showed a significant spatial variation, with higher abundances of the family Tubificidae and the genus Dero (Naididae) occurring in the First Plateau. In the Second and Third plateaus, few species were dominant, with increases in the presence of species of Naididae below dams. We found a clear decrease in species richness along the Iguaçu River. Moreover, we found that Oligochaeta assemblage was influenced by some environmental variables such as altitude, conductivity, substrate type and temperature, and by anthropogenic activities (human occupation and damming). The results supported the use of Oligochaeta as surrogate taxa to predict environmental changes along impacted (dammed and eutrophic) rivers. The validity of this was indicated by the strong and significant gradient registered, from the headwater to mouth of the Iguaçu River.Keywords: surrogate taxa, reservoir cascade, geomorphologic gradient, human occupation, Iguaçu River. Usando assembléias de Oligochaeta como um indicador de mudanças ambientais ResumoFoi delineada uma pesquisa de campo (toda extensão do rio; não barrado: Primeiro e Segundo planaltos; barrado: Terceiro planalto) para testar a hipótese de que a cascata de reservatórios promove redução na riqueza de espécies e muda a composição da assembléia de Oligochaeta ao longo do Rio Iguaçu. Mudanças nas variáveis ambientais e na riqueza e composição de Oligochaeta foram sumarizadas por Análise de Correspondência Canônica. Ao longo do Rio Iguaçu, a condutividade e a altitude diminuíram, enquanto a temperatura aumentou. A composição de Oligochaeta mostrou variação espacial significativa, com maiores abundâncias da família Tubificidae e do gênero Dero (Naididae) ocorrendo no Primeiro planalto. No Segundo e Terceiro planaltos, poucas espécies foram dominantes, com aumento na presença de espécies de Naididae abaixo de barragens. Foi encontrada uma clara diminuição na riqueza de espécies ao longo do Rio Iguaçu. Além disso, observou-se que a assembléia de Oligochaeta foi influenciada por algumas variáveis ambientais, como altitude, condutividade, tipo de substrato e temperatura, e por atividades antropogênicas (ocupação humana e barramento). RESUMEN.Los ambientes marinos están sujetos a presiones antropogénicas que afectan su biodiversidad y diversidad funcional. Los estudios con enfoque funcional identifican el papel de las especies en el ecosistema mediante el análisis de sus atributos; esto representa una alternativa más robusta que los estudios clásicos de enfoque taxonómico. Tradicionalmente sólo los atributos tróficos han sido considerados en los análisis de diversidad funcional en ecosistemas marinos, cuando existe una infinidad de atributos no tróficos relacionados con la funcionalidad de las especies. Se analizaron algunos índices de estimación de la diversidad funcional, así como el proceso de selección de los atributos funcionales para entender críticamente su utilidad. El enfoque funcional podría ser fundamental para mejorar su comprensión y generar medidas efectivas de protección que permitan desacelerar y de ser posible, revertir el proceso de pérdida de la biodiversidad a escala global. Finalmente, se reformulan preguntas de investigación y propuestas de hacia dónde se debería enfocar esta área del conocimiento. Functional diversity on marine environments: new perspectivesABSTRACT. Marine ecosystems are under anthropogenic pressures degrading both biodiversity and functional diversity. Functional diversity studies identify species functions through trait analysis, and are a robust alternative to the classical taxonomic approach. Although trophic traits are considered predominantly when analyzing functional diversity on marine ecosystem studies, there are other functional traits related to the species functions in the ecosystem. To critically understand the use of existing functional diversity indexes, we analyze them and their trait selection processes. The functional diversity approach improves our understanding of ecosystems and can help us slow and reduce the global-scale biodiversity loss by developing effective frameworks for monitoring and protection. We present some study questions and suggestions about how research should be oriented through functional analysis.
