Ecological filters and variability in stream macroinvertebrate communities: do taxonomic and functional structure follow the same path?

Abstract: We examined the community-environment relationships of lotic macroinvertebrates in near-pristine headwater streams, and the correlation between patterns in taxonomic and functional structure at two regional extents. The across-ecoregion scale comprised five ecoregions spanning all of Finland, while the within-ecoregion scale comprised of north boreal and middle boreal ecoregions. We expected that taxonomic structure should exhibit stronger relationships than functional structure to spatial gradients, while the… Show more

“…Because of the availability of this information for North America and subsequently Europe (e.g. Moog, 1995), it has been used to assess various stressors such as urbanisation (Wang & Kanehl, 2003), channel regulation (Fleituch, 2003), floods (Lepori & Malmqvist, 2007) and many others as well as in comparisons of large-scale patterns of taxonomic versus functional community characteristics (Johnson, Goedkoop & Sandin, 2004;Heino et al, 2007).…”

“…Thus, significant but quantitatively small (i.e. ecologically insignificant) trait differences across landscape units should not be used as an argument for small-scale, regionally differing trait references (for such pleas, see Heino et al, 2007).…”

“…Species respond distinctively along environmental gradients at various spatial scales (Cottenie 2005;Heino et al, 2007), and invertebrate communities in lotic systems may be structured along resource gradients from the headwaters to the mouths (Vannote et al, 1980). This gradient may be disrupted by the construction of dams, especially downstream, as predicted by the serial discontinuity concept (Ward and Stanford, 1983).…”
