Ecological stress and linear enamel hypoplasia in Cebus

Abstract: Although it is assumed that monkeys in some environments experience more nutritional or physiological stress than others, little research has been conducted on this topic. This study examines the relationship between linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) frequency, a physiological indicator of stress, and environmental stressors. To test this relationship, LEH frequencies were calculated for 144 Cebus from 54 locations in Brazil. Habitat, temperature range, and annual rainfall were compared between individuals with a… Show more

“…Skinner and Hopwood (2004) reported that LEH defects occurred repeatedly at estimated mean intervals of 6 months in Gorilla gorilla, Pan troglodytes, and Pongo pygmaeus, suggesting to the authors that seasonal stressors (related to food availability and/or illness) might be influencing LEH timing in these species. There are regional patterns of LEH expression in non-human primates (Hannibal and Guatelli-Steinberg, 2005;Chollet and Teaford, 2010), but the causes of these patterns are unknown. “…Her results showed that wild giraffes exhibited no signs of enamel hypoplasia, suggesting that wild giraffes suffer considerably lower levels of systemic stress than their captive counterparts. Collet and Teaford (2008) investigated the relationship between external environmental conditions and enamel hypoplasia prevalence in Cebus monkeys. They explored the association between higher frequencies of enamel hypoplasia and increased environmental stress.…”
