Economic analysis and food security contribution of supplemental irrigation and farm ponds: evidence from northern Burkina Faso

Abstract: Background Dry spells are serious obstacles to rainfed agriculture in Sahelian countries. Various water harvesting techniques are used by farmers to reduce the impact of climate variability, but are not sufficient in the case of a prolonged drought lasting 2–3 weeks. The farmers believe supplemental irrigation is a good way to adapt rainfed agriculture to dry spells. In this study, we evaluated the food contribution and profitability of supplemental irrigation of rainfed crops comparing various… Show more

“…In Sub-Sahara the most frequently used indicators to measure households food security are focused on household food insecurity access scale [29,30], household hunger scale [31], household food security survey module [32], household pulse survey [33], household dietary diversity scores [34], household consumption and expenditure surveys [24,35], months of adequate food provisioning [36], food adequacy questionnaire [37], food consumption score [33,38,39], food insecurity experience scale [40], measures the severity of food insecurity in population [31], household dietary diversity score [41], calorie adequacy indicator [27], coping strategy index [38,32], food consumption score [42], food security index [43,44]. In previous studies, indicators are jointly used taking into account not only their advantages and weakness but also food security multi-dimensions [36,45,46,47,48].…”

“…The agriculture plays a fundamental role in food security but is highly vulnerable to climate variability and change [27] The current climate change poses a major threat to global food security around the world [28] and agricultural growth and production [29], [30]. Climate change affects rice production by increasing temperature, changing rainfall, water retention and soil fertility [31].…”

“…In addition, irrigated agriculture comes with reliability, and a wider and more diversified choice of higher-value crops [6]. Irrigated agriculture utilizes 20% of cultivated lands throughout the world and produces 40% of total crop production [5], which is a significant contribution in terms of food security [7,8]. In 2016, agriculture accounted globally for nearly 92% of total freshwater withdrawals [9].…”

“…Evapotranspiration (ET) contributes to the highest water loss in cultivated semi-arid regions [25,26]. Furthermore, the identification of ET's effect on the water budget is essential for water resource management as well as forest growth and species diversity, sustainable crop production, food security, and social stability [8,17,19,[27][28][29]. Therefore, applying more efficient ET-reduction strategies are important to achieve efficient and sustainable water use [30,31].…”
