Economic Convergence in EU NUTS 3 Regions: A Spatial Econometric Perspective

Abstract: The topic of economic convergence is still crucial in the European Union (EU) as promoting regional growth and the reduction of disparities remains a key objective. In this paper we investigate development and economic growth across EU regions. Particular attention is given to σ-convergence and β-convergence. These analyses are carried out for regional units corresponding to the third level of the NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics) classification. Focusing on a refined geographical scale c… Show more

“…At the first level of analysis, Postiglione et al [12] discuss the regional equality within countries and across the EU regions by studying σ-convergence and the conditional βconvergence process. The authors highlight the impact of the interdependencies that occur at the regional level between EU regions and point out that the speed of convergence is slowing down in the European Union.…”

“…is considered by modelling two different time periods: one free of mobility and social restrictions (18 May – 6 November 2020), the other characterized by progressive and differentiated social limitations established during the local “second wave” (14 November – 31 December 2020). The study focuses on North Italy, because of its high incidence of the COVID-19 and as a representative area of the western countries for its socio-economic features ( Postiglione et al, 2020 ; Rosano et al, 2020 ).…”
