Ecosystem variability along the estuarine salinity gradient: Examples from long‐term study of San Francisco Bay

Abstract: The salinity gradient of estuaries plays a unique and fundamental role in structuring spatial patterns of physical properties, biota, and biogeochemical processes. We use variability along the salinity gradient of San Francisco Bay to illustrate some lessons about the diversity of spatial structures in estuaries and their variability over time. Spatial patterns of dissolved constituents (e.g., silicate) can be linear or nonlinear, depending on the relative importance of river-ocean mixing and internal sinks (d… Show more

“…Here, each estuary had a clear freshwater—marine gradient over which salinity increased and δ 18 O‐H 2 O values shifted toward the 0‰ marine end‐member. The decline in N and DOC concentrations over this gradient fits the standard estuarine mixing model, where nutrient‐rich rivers are increasingly diluted with oligotrophic ocean water (Cloern et al ). Despite the unusually wet year (1900 mm rain), the dry season increase in salinity and upstream δ 18 O‐H 2 O values confirmed a seasonal decrease in freshwater inputs.…”

“…Hence, salinity could play a role for both the vertical and horizontal distribution of the community or act as a proxy for LSL mixing. Mixing zones, known to be particularly diverse due to hosting organisms from both environments (Gibbons and Gilbert, 2015), presented a particular strong response correlated with salinity changes (Cloern et al, 2017). The observed shift in salinity could most likely be associated with Fiordland’s characteristic extremely high rainfall levels and thus large freshwater inputs (NIWA, 2016) resulting in large differences in environmental conditions between the surface and the 10 m depth strata.…”

“…Estuaries are unique because they are environments where there are major changes in various gradients including temperature, salinity, nutrients, and turbulence [1]. They are also recognized as dynamic ecosystems where gradients in biological and chemical processes (e.g., algal biomass and nutrients) are associated with the mixing of freshwater and seawater during tidal changes [2].…”
