Ectopic Pregnancy Is Associated with High Anandamide Levels and Aberrant Expression of FAAH and CB1 in Fallopian Tubes

Abstract: High anandamide levels and reduced expression of CB1 and FAAH may play a role in ectopic implantation.

“…Even so, the AEA concentration in human follicular fluid has been reported to rise during oocyte maturation (El-Talatini et al 2009) and this concentration is even higher in the oviduct (Gebeh et al 2012). In humans, on average, one oocyte completes growth each month and is ovulated in response to a mid-cycle surge of LH and in response to this LH surge, the oocyte resumes meiosis (Hunt and Hassold 2008).…”

“…Contribution from the epidydimis, prostate, and seminal vesicles is possible. In addition, cannabinoid receptors and endocannabinoid synthetic and degradation enzymes have been localized in fallopian tubal epithelium, which indicates exposure of spermatozoa to the endocannabinoids in the female genital tract (45)(46)(47)(48).…”

“…FAAH activity in peripheral blood cell membranes is significantly lower in women with ectopic pregnancies than in those with normal pregnancies (Gebeh et al 2013). Similarly, the expression of FAAH mRNA is also significantly lower in the fallopian tubes of women with ectopic pregnancies than in those of women in the luteal or follicular phase of their menstrual cycle (Gebeh et al 2012). Furthermore, plasma anandamide levels are significantly higher in women with ectopic pregnancies than in those with normal pregnancies (Gebeh et al 2013).…”

“…FAAH, NAPE-PLD, and CB1 and CB2 receptors can be strongly detected in the luminal border of the fallopian tube epithelium (Gebeh et al 2012). FAAH activity in peripheral blood cell membranes is significantly lower in women with ectopic pregnancies than in those with normal pregnancies (Gebeh et al 2013).…”
