Ectopic Thyroid Carcinoma with Metastases in a Beagle Dog

Abstract: Abstract. A 10.25-year-old female beagle had an invasive neoplasm at the base of the heart which metastasized to the lungs, pancreas, and kidney. The neoplasm in these locations was composed of clusters of polyhedral cells surrounded by fine fibrovascular stroma. The differential diagnoses were malignant chemodectoma, ectopic parathyroid carcinoma, and ectopic thyroid carcinoma. Based on ultrastructural features, this tumor was an ectopic thyroid carcinoma. The differential diagnosis for primary benign and mali… Show more

“…3 Neoplasms at the heart base were chemodectomas or ectopic parathyroid or thyroid gland carcinomas. 10,16,22,24 Lymphomas or epithelial thymomas were also identified in this location. Intracavitary heart neoplasms were hemangiosarcomas, chemodectomas, or rhabdomyomas.…”

“…This finding is consistent with the existence of only sporadic literature reports describing these tumors. 7,11,26,40,44 Nevertheless, ectopic thyroid tissue within the mediastinum is reported to occur frequently in the dog. 83 The majority of heart tumors in people are reported to be metastatic.…”

“…Only sporadic cases of cardiac myxoma have been reported in dogs. 19,20,24,26 Occasional cases of ectopic thyroid or parathyroid tumors at the heart base, 7,11,26,40,44 pericardial mesotheliomas, 61,[70][71][72] or other neoplasms [8][9][10]24,[26][27][28][29]35,36,39,[73][74][75][76] also have been reported. Some histologic types of cardiac tumors have been associated with certain breeds of dogs.…”

“…The frequency of hemangiosarcomas is almost 10 times that of chemodectomas [5]. Less common heart tumors include granular cell tumors [6], chondrosarcomas [7], osteosarcomas [8], fibromas [9], fibrosarcomas [10,11], cardiac lipomas [12], malignant mesenchymal tumors [13], lymphomas [14,15], rhabdomyosarcomas [16,17], neurofibromas [18], angiolipomas [19], myxomas [20][21][22][23], right atrial myxosarcomas [21,24,25], ectopic thyroid carcinomas [26][27][28], and pericardial mesothelioma ( Figure 18-1) [1,5].…”

“…Other tumors in this area, less frequently encountered, are ectopic thyroid carcinomas [27] and lymphomas [5,14]. There are differences of echogenicity (homogenous or heterogenous tissue, degree of echogenicity), site of origin, dimensions, shape, location, contour (smooth or irregular), mobility, infiltration, single or multiple lesions, unilocular or multilocular structures, and growth type, which can help to differentiate these types of tumors.…”
