PurposeThis research explores mitigating carbon emissions and integrating sustainability in e-commerce logistics by optimizing the multi-depot pollution routing problem with time windows (MDPRPTW). A proposed model contrasts non-collaborative and collaborative decision-making for order assignment among logistics service providers (LSPs), incorporating low-carbon considerations.Design/methodology/approachThe model is substantiated using improved adaptive large neighborhood search (IALNS), tabu search (TS) and oriented ant colony algorithm (OACA) within the context of e-commerce logistics. For model validation, a normal distribution is employed to generate random demand and inputs, derived from the location and requirements files of LSPs.FindingsThis research validates the efficacy of e-commerce logistics optimization and IALNS, TS and OACA algorithms, especially when demand follows a normal distribution. It establishes that cooperation among LSPs can substantially reduce carbon emissions and costs, emphasizing the importance of integrating sustainability in e-commerce logistics optimization.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper proposes a meta-heuristic algorithm to solve the NP-hard problem. Methodologies such as reinforcement learning can be investigated in future work.Practical implicationsThis research can help logistics managers understand the status of sustainable and cost-effective logistics operations and provide a basis for optimal decision-making.Originality/valueThis paper describes the complexity of the MDPRPTW model, which addresses both carbon emissions and cost reduction. Detailed information about the algorithm, methodology and computational studies is investigated. The research problem encompasses various practical aspects related to routing optimization in e-commerce logistics, aiming for sustainable development.

Purpose Blockchains provide significant benefits for business operations due to its transparency, traceability and information sharing. However, application to the food and beverage (F&B) industry was scarce. The purpose of this study is to explore how to form F&B managers’ blockchain adoption by applying behavioral reasoning theory (BRT). Additionally, supply chain partnerships (SCPs) were tested for the potential moderating roles within BRT. This study’s findings expand existing knowledge by providing novel information for F&B management. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from F&B managers by using an online survey method. A structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis were performed to test the hypothesized relationships. Findings Findings revealed that the positive effects of “reasons for” on “attitudes,” and “adoption intentions” while “reasons against” did not show such effects. Environmental benefits of blockchains were found to lead more positive attitudes while traditional barriers were the greatest constraints for adopting blockchains. This study supports the significant moderating roles of SCPs within the context of F&B blockchain adoption. Originality/value This study contributes to the technology literature in the foodservice context by applying BRT as a theoretical lens. The importance of developing SCPs for F&B blockchain adoption and exploitation is highlighted.

While the Internet of Things (IoT) initiated the era of interconnected devices, the IoE takes this concept to new heights by interlinking objects, individuals, data, and processes. Symmetry in IoE innovation and technology is essential for creating a harmonious and efficient ecosystem to ensure that the benefits are accessible to a broad spectrum of society while minimizing potential drawbacks. This comprehensive review paper explores the multifaceted landscape of the IoE, delving into its core concepts, enabling technologies, real-world applications, and the intricate web of challenges it presents. A focal point of this review is the diverse array of real-world applications spanning healthcare, smart cities, industry 4.0, agriculture, and sustainability. Previous works and examples illustrate how the IoE reshapes these domains, leading to greater efficiency, sustainability, and improved decision making. However, the transformative power of the IoE is accompanied by a host of challenges, including security and privacy concerns, interoperability issues, and the ethical implications of ubiquitous connectivity. These challenges are dissected in order to comprehensively understand the obstacles and potential solutions in the IoE landscape. As we stand on the cusp of an IoE-driven future, this review paper serves as a valuable resource for researchers, policy makers, and industry professionals seeking to navigate the complexities of this emerging paradigm.
