Editorial: Cuff‐ and cap‐assisted colonoscopy: More questions than answers

Abstract

Screening colonoscopy for early detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) is recommended by national and international guidelines and allows both detection and resection of colorectal polyps in the same session. 1 In fact, an endoscopic resection of low-and high-grade colorectal adenomas as precursors of CRC is associated with a significant reduction of CRC incidence. 2 However, the endoscopist needs to adhere to defined quality parameters such as an adenoma detection rate (ADR) of at least 25%. Recent data of a national registry demonstrated that a reduced CRC incidence was associated with a sufficiently high ADR. 3 Therefore, several devices, which can easily be attached to the distal tip of the colonoscope, have been evaluated for its ability to increase the ADR.
