El presente artículo expone los resultados de una investigación realizada a los seguidores de la serie televisiva The Newsroom (HBO) en España. Para ello, se llevaron a cabo dos grupos de discusión (N=17) integrados por periodistas (con diversos roles en medios locales y nacionales) y por estudiantes de periodismo procedentes de diferentes universidades españolas. Los participantes fueron cuestionados acerca de sus experiencias, conocimientos y percepciones de la trama y los personajes de la ficción audiovisual. La interpretación de los datos se realizó a partir de cuatro niveles, que evaluaron la implicación emocional de menor a mayor grado: (1) transportación, (2) identificación, (3) interacción parasocial y (4) adoración (worship). La hipótesis principal abordó la relación entre los planteamientos éticos de The Newsroom y la implicación afectiva de los fans. Los resultados obtenidos ayudarán a entender el alto grado de identificación de los espectadores con el contenido mediático. La interiorización de valores éticos, la adopción del punto de vista del personaje y la reflexión sobre su misión informativa, a partir de la propuesta de la ficción, son aspectos significativos. Los seguidores demostraron una tendencia aspiracional a través de la empatía y el deseo de imitación de los personajes principales. Los razonamientos de los fans desvelaron interacciones parasociales y sus experiencias de transportación (inmersión en el relato) demostraron habilidades críticas, expresadas mediante contraargumentos.

The belief that consuming violent media will lead someone to commit violence is a longstanding societal concern. This concern manifests in the phenomenon of 'antis' within fandoms, which began to emerge around 2016. Initially driven by shipping conflicts, the issue of social justice and the increasing use of social media have allowed this phenomenon to spread easily across various fandoms worldwide. Antis' behavior can be seen as a form of moral panic in several ways: by associating pro-shippers—those who do not agree that consuming violent content will turn someone into a perpetrator or supporter of violence—with sexual offenders and pedophiles, antis use an 'us versus them' mentality to uphold their moral standards and portray themselves as the most moral group.

This article examines the Black Rifle Coffee Company brand, its fans, and its connection to right-wing violence. By incorporating the literature on brand culture and the concepts and tools from fan studies, I show how Black Rifle merchandise develops into wearable symbols of white supremacy and reactionary politics celebrated by a fan culture and integrated into a tactical ensemble. While both Black Rifle’s promotional content and fans’ actions point to how capitalism provides a permission structure for white masculine supremacy, only by combining these approaches do we reveal the tactical body. I argue that the tactical body is a fannish embodiment of white supremacist conspiracy theories and a playful form of political engagement designed to actualize a revenge fantasy of insurrection. While I focus primarily on how Black Rifle fans play out their tactical canon in online and physical spaces, this case study points to a larger trend of tactical brands profiting from white male grievances and political tribalism.
