Education for appropriate seatbelt use required for early-phase pregnant women drivers

Abstract: Considerable numbers of pregnant women do not understand the correct way to use seatbelts; thus, they are inappropriately restrained when wearing seatbelts. To improve appropriate seatbelt wearing by pregnant women vehicle passengers, we examined their use by pregnant women drivers and the independent factors influencing appropriate use. We undertook a cross-sectional survey of 1,000 pregnant women in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Among 774 returned questionnaires, we analysed those of 680 pregnant women who always… Show more

“…Therefore, improvement in seatbelt use among both pregnant and non-pregnant women is an effective intervention. As previously mentioned, not only seatbelt fastening but also its correct use should be promoted in safety education provided by health professionals [16]. In this study, the rate of seatbelt use among pregnant women did not differ significantly from that in non-pregnant women (70.0% vs. 70.4%).…”

“…Even during pregnancy, observed how the seat belt should be worn [4] in the early stages when the suggestion is to use a safety belt with three fixed points during the literature research. Three fixed points, including design and use, have been concluded; automatic implementation does not present a new issue in this work because plugs are manufactured at a single seat belt position.…”

“…So far, wearing a seat belt correctly continues to have more negative effects than the syndrome itself. The results of a scientific study from the [26]on how much people trust and respect the laws affecting how seat belts should be fastened in the US, as well as a comparison of whether the same rule applies to both seats before and after the seat belt, suggest that efforts should be made to increase seat belt use among high-risk populations.…”

“…This finding may have been due in part to inappropriate seat belt use. According to one investigation that examined the method of seat belt use, 13.1% of pregnant drivers who always wore a seat belt did so incorrectly [ 11 ]. Among those incorrect uses, the most common was having the lap belt cross over the abdomen [ 11 ].…”
