Educational Needs and Perspectives on the Future of the Green Industry in Utah

Abstract: The green industry in Utah is a large and diverse group that ranges from nursery/greenhouse growers and retailers to landscape maintenance and design professionals to irrigation and turf industry professionals. Because of the size and diverse membership of the Utah green industry, extension faculty are challenged to gauge the needs and attitudes of the industry as a clientele group. In 2007, we conducted a mail survey of the Utah green industry to identify the learning preferences of industry members, … Show more

“…Nicholas and Durham 60 found that winegrowers in Northern California perceived frost as a risk to their operations, as unexpected occurrences of frost have become more common; fruit producers in both California and Florida (in the Southeastern United States) in particular were most likely to perceived risks from frost. 61,62 Severe and prolonged drought is also especially problematic for many Southwestern farmers, while farmers in California are particularly concerned about decreased water availability, 13,63,64 which has followed after prolonged extreme drought in California and the Southwestern United States and has negatively affected farmers there.…”

“…It is predicted that by 2030 the world will face a 40% global water deficit (2030Water Resource Group, 2009) "under the business-as-usual scenario" (UNESCO, 2015, p. 11) due to urban and economic development. Water scarcity significantly threatens the nursery and greenhouse industry (Kratsch, Ward, Shao, & Rupp, 2010) with the need for industry engagement in water-saving techniques described by Mezzitt (1992) as an "international challenge requiring local solutions" (p. 82). Fortunately, water conservation efforts are expanding.…”

“…In the U.S. alone it was estimated that between 2006 and 2013 nearly 760 billion gallons of water were conserved due to alterations in agricultural irrigation systems within the industry (USEPA, 2014). Unfortunately, those water savings are not enough to overcome future demand and efforts must expand to ensure a water supply that will meet future demands (Kratsch et al, 2010).…”

“…Water issues are a major threat to the future of the nursery and greenhouse industry (Kratsch, Ward, Shao, & Rupp, 2010) with the management of water resources among growers described "as a national (or even international) challenge requiring local solutions" (Mezitt, 1992, p. 82). The ground and surface water used to grow plants can impact water availability and fertilizers, and horticultural chemicals can affect water quality through leaching and runoff (Yeager, Million, Larsen, & Stamps, 2010).…”
