Pre-pollination mechanisms for isolation among sympatric bat-pollinated plants are largely unknown. We investigated the mechanisms for reproductive segregation between four sympatric chiropterophilous bromeliads in Veracruz, Mexico. With ex situ and in situ manual pollination treatments we determined the breeding system by assessing fruiting and seedling success and sampled bat visitors using mist-nets and infrared cameras. Bromeliads showed staggered flowering, different pollen deposition sites on the body of the pollinator and differences in the reward offered. These traits may have evolved to reduce the competitive costs of sharing pollinators while providing a constant supply of food for the nectarivorous bat community.

Do predators influence the behaviour of bats?

Many aspects of animal behaviour are affected by real-time changes in the risk of predation. This conclusion holds for virtually all taxa and ecological systems studied, but does it hold for bats? Bats are poorly represented in the literature on anti-predator behaviour, which may reflect a lack of nocturnal predators specialized on bats. If bats actually experience a world with minimal anti-predator concerns, then they will provide a unique contrast within the realm of vertebrate ecology. Alternatively, such predator-driven behaviour in bats may not yet be fully understood, given the difficulties in working with these highly mobile and nocturnal animals. We provide a wide-ranging exploration of these issues in bat behaviour. We first cover the basic predator-prey information available on bats, both on potential predators and the ways in which bats might perceive predators and respond to attacks. We then cover work relevant to key aspects of bat behaviour, such as choice of daytime roosts, the nature of sleep and torpor, evening roost departures, moonlight avoidance, landscape-related movement patterns, and habitat selection. Overall, the evidence in favour of a strong influence of predators on bat behaviour is equivocal, with the picture clouded by contradictory results and a lack of information on potential predators and the perception of risk by bats. It seems clear that day-active bats run a considerable risk of being killed by diurnal raptors, which are able to capture bats with relative ease. Thus, bats taking advantage of a pulse of insects just prior to sunset are likely taking risks to gain much-needed energy. Further, the choice of daytime roosts by bats is probably strongly influenced by roost safety. Few studies, however, have directly addressed either of these topics. As a group, insectivorous temperate-zone bats show no clear tendency to avoid apparently risky situations, such as activity on moonlit nights. However, some observations are consistent with the idea that predation risk affects choice of movement paths and feeding areas by temperate-zone bats, as well as the timing of roost departures. The behaviour of tropical bats, on the other hand, seems more generally influenced by predators; this is especially true for tropical nectarivores and frugivores, but also for insectivorous bats. Presumably there are more serious predators on bats in the tropics (e.g. specialized raptors or carnivorous bats), but the identity of these predators is unclear. More information is needed to assess fully the influence of predators on bat behaviour. There is much need for work on the ways in which bats perceive predators via auditory, visual, and olfactory cues, and whether bats have some knowledge of the risks posed by different predators. Also needed is information on how predators attack bats and how bats react to attacking predators. Difficult to obtain, but of critical value, will be information on the nature of the predation risk experienced by bats while away from roosts and during the full darkness of night.

“…It is important to mention that due to the difficulties surrounding the study area, the sampling design did not include several months of the year and therefore the sampling effort set for this study may be insufficient to detect some species registered previously, for example it has been recorded for other regions of the country that the activity of some bats is different in some months of the year due to different environmental and social factors (Santos-Moreno, Ruiz, & Sánchez, 2010). Regardless of this situation, the results in this study contribute significantly to the information on bat richness in the area and demonstrate the need of continuing this type of basic studies in order to increase the diversity knowledge as well as, to provide the real number of bat species that inhabit this small area within the municipality of Tecate.…”

EcologyRichness of insectivorous bats in a chaparral area in the municipality of Tecate, Baja California, MexicoRiqueza de murciélagos insectívoros en una zona de chaparral en el municipio de Tecate, Abstract Twenty species of bats have been reported in the state of Baja California, however, there is not much information available for this group due to the lack of local studies. Therefore, the objective of this study was to increase the knowledge about the actual existing chiropteran fauna in Tecate, Baja California. For this purpose, a combined sampling was performed by capturing specimens using mist nets and an ultrasonic bat detector. The sampling took place from September to November 2013 and from May to June 2014. Five species of the Vespertillionidae family were registered with mist nets, and the ultrasonic records detected 12 species of the Vespertilionidae, Molossidae and Phyllostomidae families. The fact that 4 scantly documented species were detected in the area (Eumops perotis, Lasiurus xanthinus, Lasiurus blossevillii and Myotis melanorhinus) is noteworthy. The results obtained provide the first data about echolocation sounds of bats in this locality. ResumenEn el estado de Baja California se han registrado 20 especies de murciélagos, desafortunadamente para esta región la información disponible sobre este grupo es escasa debido a la falta de estudios locales. De esta manera, el objetivo del presente estudio fue incrementar el conocimiento sobre la quiropterofauna presente en Tecate, Baja California. Para esto, se realizó un muestreo combinado mediante la captura de ejemplares con redes de niebla y un detector ultrasónico. Los muestreos fueron realizados durante los meses de septiembre a noviembre de 2013 y de mayo a junio de 2014. Mediante las redes de niebla se registraron 5 especies de la familia Vespertillionidae y con los registros ultrasónicos se detectaron 12 especies de las familias Vespertilionidae, Molossidae y Phyllostomidae. Destaca la presencia de 4 especies (Eumops perotis, Lasiurus xanthinus, Lasiurus blossevillii y Myotis melanorhinus) que cuentan con pocos registros para la zona. Los resultados obtenidos aportan los primeros datos sobre los sonidos de ecolocalización de los murciélagos para esta localidad. Por tanto, la información obtenida en este trabajo es de importancia para la implementación de estrategias para la conservación de los murciélagos de esta área.
