Efectos de la microestructura en el comportamiento hidromecánico de suelos compactados

Abstract

The microstructure, understood as the distribution of pore sizes and their connectivity, is an important factor that affects the mechanical behaviour and the hydraulic properties of compacted soils with fine fraction (silts and clays). The present study evaluates the effect of the microstructure on statically compacted samples of low plasticity clay from Barcelona, focusing on the analysis of the compressibility of the soil along mean net stress and matric suction paths. The material has been compacted to a predefined dry density (lower than the maximum of standard Proctor) and at two contrasting water contents to generate two differentiated microstructures. The study mainly follows an experimental methodology. It has involved the development of a new isotropic cell with control and measurement of matric suction, its calibration and setting up, as well as the implementation of new test protocols, the preparation of the material at predefined states, the development of a test program with suction and mean net stress paths, and the measurement of the microstructure and the small-strain shear moduli at selected points. Once compacted, samples have followed drying and wetting paths, as well as isotropic loading paths at constant water content (with measurement of matric suction) and at constant matric suction (with measurement of water volume changes). The loading paths have allowed studying the effect of the microstructure on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of the material (water permeability and water retention properties along wetting/drying paths, soil compressibility on loading, evolution of small-strain shear moduli) along a wide range of pore size distributions, saturation degrees, void ratios, matric suctions (between 0 and 0.5 MPa) and mean net stresses (up to 2 MPa).
 The isotropic cell developed along the first phase of the Thesis has allowed locally measuring the axial and radial deformations (along two orthogonal directions) through an innovative system that uses external displacement transducers. It includes a complex system of bottom and top caps, which allows measuring matric suction with a miniature pressure transducer and at constant air pressure (higher than atmospheric conditions), as well as applying matric suction through the axis translation technique. Two caps have been designed to include bender elements (transmitter and receiver transducers) that have allowed measuring the small-strain shear moduli along different hydraulic and mechanical states.
 Along the investigation, particular care has been taken to separate the effects of the microstructure associated with the compaction process at two contrasting water contents from those microstructural changes arising along the hydromechanical paths followed. The microstructural changes for the different stress states have been investigated with
 intrusion/extrusion mercury porosimetry tests, as well as using field emission scanning electron FESEM microscopy.
 The results have been interpreted with existing elasto-plastic constitutive models that incorporate the effects of the microstructure on the mechanical response (changes in the compressibility) and on the hydraulic behaviour (changes in the retention curve) of the compacted soil. The effects of the microstructure on the loading-collapse yield surface induced on compaction, on the compressibility on loading, on the small-strain shear modulus, and on the water retention curves of the material, have been studied. The evolution along the hydro-mechanical paths followed of the induced anisotropy during onedimensional static compaction has been analysed with an elasto-plastic constitutive model with kinematic hardening. La microestructura, entendida como la distribución y conectividad en el tamaño de poros, es un factor importante que afecta al comportamiento mecánico y a las propiedades hidráulicas de suelos compactados con fracción fina (limos y arcillas). El presente estudio evalúa el efecto de la microestructura en muestras estáticamente compactadas de una arcilla de baja plasticidad de Barcelona, enfocándose en el análisis de la compresibilidad del suelo ante cambios de tensión media y de succión matricial. El material se ha compactado a una densidad seca prefijada (inferior a la máxima del Proctor normal) y a dos humedades contrastantes para generar dos microestructuras diferenciadas. Se ha seguido una metodología principalmente experimental, que ha involucrado el desarrollo de una nueva célula isótropa con control / medida de succión, así como su calibración y puesta a punto, la implementación de nuevos protocolos para los ensayos, la preparación del material a unos estados pre-establecidos, y el desarrollo de un programa de ensayos que involucra cambios de tensión media y de succión, así como medidas puntuales de la microestructura y de la rigidez al corte a pequeñas deformaciones. Una vez compactado el material se han seguido trayectorias que involucran el secado y humedecimiento de las muestras, así como trayectorias de carga isótropas a humedad constante (con medida de la succión matricial) y a succión matricial constante (con medida de los cambios de volumen de agua). Las trayectorias tensionales han permitido analizar el efecto de la microestructura sobre el comportamiento hidro-mecánico del material (permeabilidad y retención al agua en trayectorias de humedecimiento/secado, compresibilidad ante carga, evolución de la deformación de corte y rigidez al corte) ante una amplia gama de distribución de tamaños de poros, grados de saturación, índices de poros, succiones matriciales (entre 0 y 0.5 MPa) y tensiones medias (hasta 2 MPa). La célula isótropa desarrollada en la primera fase de la Tesis ha permitido medir localmente las deformaciones axiales y radiales (éstas últimas a lo largo de dos direcciones ortogonales) mediante un novedoso sistema que utiliza transductores de desplazamiento externos. También ha incluido un complejo sistema de cabezales, que ha permitido medir la succión matricial mediante un transductor de presión miniatura y ante una presión de aire constante (superior a la atmosférica), ha permitido también aplicar la succión matricial mediante la técnica de traslación de ejes. Dos cabezales se han diseñado para incluir bender elements, que han permitido determinar el módulo de rigidez al corte a pequeñas deformaciones ante diferentes estados hidráulicos y mecánicos. A lo largo de la investigación se ha tenido especial cuidado en separar los efectos de la microestructura originada durante el proceso de compactación a dos humedades contrastantes de los efectos de la microestructura asociados a las trayectorias hidromecánicas. Los cambios de microestructura se han investigado mediante ensayos de porosimetr ía por intrusión/extrusión de mercurio, así como utilizando microscopía electrónica FESEM a diferentes estados hidráulicos. Los resultados se han interpretaron mediante modelos constitutivos elasto-plásticos existentes que incorporan el efecto de la microestructura en el comportamiento mecánico (cambios en la compresibilidad) e hidráulico (cambios en la curva de retención) del suelo. Se ha analizado el efecto de la micro estructura sobre las superficies de fluencia loading-collaps inducidas durante la compactación, sobre la compresibilidad y la rigidez al corte ante pequeñas deformaciones, así como sobre las curvas de retención del material. También se ha analizado mediante un modelo constitutivo elasto-plástico con endurecimiento cinemático la evolución a lo largo de las trayectorias hidro-mecánicas seguidas de la anisotropía inducida durante el proceso de compactación estática unidimensional.
