Effect of a Self-Etch Adhesive Containing Nanobioglass on Postoperative Sensitivity of Posterior Composite Restorations - A Randomized Trial

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Postoperative sensitivity is one of the major problems regarding posterior resin composite restorations that causes patient discomfort, maybe a reason for replacement of the restoration with an additional office time. AIM: To evaluate the effect of the addition of a Nanobioglass to a self-etch adhesive on the reduction of post-operative sensitivity following composite restorations versus a self-etch adhesive that is free of Nanobioglass agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients hav… Show more

“…2 Some studies showed no significant difference in post-operative sensitivity either by using total etch adhesives or by self-etch adhesives. 11 Oliveira in his one month recall period concluded that self-etch causes mild post-operative sensitivity in deep Class-I cavities that reduce with the period of time 10 which is in accordance with present study. Krithikadatta et al conducted meta-analysis and concluded no significant difference in Post-operative sensitivity with both total etch and self etch.…”

“…As self-etch adhesives do not completely remove the smear layer, many practitioners believe that self-etch adhesives cause less post-operative sensitivity than total etch adhesives. 11 Applying etchant in deep cavity as a component of the etch and rinse approach removed the smear layer and increased the permeability of dentin make the tooth vulnerable to postoperative sensitivity if dentinal tubules were not occluded by hybridization. 12 Amin et al conducted a similar study over a period of one week and concluded post-operative sensitivity with both self-etch adhesive and total etch adhesive remains till one week.…”

“…Test value for population mean was 1.38, while predicted population mean was 3.69, and population standard deviation was 1.6. 8 Consecutive non-probability sampling method was utilised in this trial. Participants satisfying inclusion criteria were filtered from Outpatient department and were randomly distributed by Trial-autonomous researcher in each interventional group.…”

“…However, this attribute of bonding agent is subjected to time-dependent decline, mainly due to the longterm instability and deterioration of hybrid layer. 7,8 By fortifying bonding agents with nanoparticles, significant enhancements in physiochemical attributes and long-term stability of dentin-adhesive interface can be achieved. 9 The rationale of this study was to upgrade the mechanical atributes of bonding agent by the addition of titania nanoparticles to reduce the issues of sensitivity associated with composite restorations.…”
