Effect of Actinomyces viscosus on the Establishment and Symbiosis of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis in SPF Rats on Different Sucrose Diets

Abstract: The effects of Actinomyces viscosus on the establishment and symbiosis of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis and of the sucrose concentration of the diet in relation to caries in rats were investigated. SPF-Osborne Mendel rats were erythromycin-treated and inoculated with Strep. mutans OMZ176E and Strep. sanguis Ny101E. In a second experiment SPF rats were superinoculated with A. viscosus Ny1, Strep. mutans OMZ176E and Strep. sanguis Ny101E. During the experiments the microbial composition of the p… Show more

Therefore, a STAMP with S. mutans-selective killing ability would be an ideal solution and could allow the normal flora to outgrow affected S. mutans populations.…”

“…Mikx et al 110 found a significant correlation between the sugar concentration of the diet fed to rats and the incidence of dental caries. Hefti and Schmid 112 found that dental caries severity increased with increasing sugars concentrations up a 40% sucrose diet.…”

“…Animal studies have also been used to investigate the relationship between amount of sugars consumed and the development of dental caries 110,111 . Mikx et al 110 found a significant correlation between the sugar concentration of the diet fed to rats and the incidence of dental caries.…”

“…Mikx et al (1975) carried out a study in which five groups of rats received diets of varying sugar concentration and found a significant positive correlation between the sucrose concentration and the incidence of caries. Hefti & Schmid (1979) found that there was also a tendency towards higher eating frequencies on the higher sugar diets.…”
