Effect of adding piperacillin–tazobactam to automated dispensing cabinets on promptness of first-dose antibiotics in hospitalized patients

Abstract: The addition of a piperacillin-tazobactam product and other commonly used i.v. antibiotics to ADCs was associated with a significantly reduced order-to-administration time for piperacillin-tazobactam first doses. This change was accounted for by a significant reduction in the time between order entry and drug administration.

“…Earlier studies indicated improved medication turnaround times (or time to first dose) upon implementing individual components of a closed‐loop EMMS . Given the difference in definitions of a medication turnaround times, it is difficult to draw direct comparisons with rates of reduction seen with some of the earlier studies that looked at the effect of CPOE only on medication turnaround times.…”

“…[4][5][6] To our knowledge, this is the first study to use the practice of stocking unit doses for commonly prescribed pediatric oral antibiotic suspensions. Since evaluating the results, pharmacy technicians now routinely check stock to ensure all products that expired are removed and refilled in a timely manner.…”
