Effect of Alternative Fillers on the Properties of Rubber Compounds

Abstract: The paper is focused on the influence of alternative fillers on rubber compounds properties. Three different types of powder fillers, drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS), perlite and calcium carbonate, were mixed into rubber compound mixtures. The mixtures were composed of STR20, EPDM, zinc oxide, steric acid, paraffin wax, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), sulphur, Wingstay L, and filler. The mixtures were mixed in a Kneader type mixer at temperature of 70°C and then continuously mixed using a two-roll mill a… Show more

“…The hardness of a material is related to the amount of filler connections to the activators and accelerators, in this study, carbon black and wood fibers [9] . A greater number of fillers restricts the movement of the chain, making the composite more rigid, from there the composite becomes more resistant to penetrating forces.…”

“…There are several papers reporting good responses to the addition of lignocellulosic fibers in the formulation of the rubber composite [6] : nanocellulose [9] , different fillers [10] , sugarcane bagasse [11] , jute fibers [12] , cereal straw. However, there are few reports about the replacement of CB by these fibers and the physical-mechanical behavior of the composite.…”

“…The research on EPDM/CaCO 3 composites mainly focuses on improving impact toughness, such as PP/EPDM/Nano-CaCO 3 composites [10,11], HDPE/EPDM/CaCO 3 composites [12] and the reinforcement effect of MAA on nano-CaCO 3 -filled EPDM vulcanizates [2]. There are few studies on the combination of EPDM/CaCO 3 exclusively [13,14]. The main reason is because calcium carbonate did not have a reinforcing effect in EPDM; the different surface or interfacial properties between calcium carbonate and the matrix [15] always resulted in a low bond strength between the filler and the rubber [16].…”

“…Interest in searching alternative fillers for rubber has been increasing recently. Many alternative fillers have been incorporated into the rubber including lignin, sludge and so forth [5][6][7]. Sepiolite is one of the example of alternative fillers being given special attention.…”
