The heating value of fuel is one of its most important physical properties, and is used for the design and numerical simulation of combustion processes within internal combustion (IC) engines. Recently, there has been a significant increase in the use of dual fuel and blended fuels in compression ignition (CI) engines. Most of the blended fuels include biodiesel as one of the constituents and hence the objective of this study is to investigate the effect of biodiesel content to lower heating value (LHV) and to develop new LHV prediction models that correlate the LHV with biodiesel fraction, density and viscosity.Furthermore, this study also investigated the effects of the LHV on CI engines performance parameters experimentally. To achieve the above mentioned objectives density, viscosity and LHV of rapeseed oil biodiesel, corn oil biodiesel and waste oil biodiesel at different blend fraction values (B0, B5, B10, B20, B50, B75, and B100, where 'B5' denotes a blend of 5% biodiesel and 95% mineral diesel, etc) were measured as per EN ISO 3675:1998, EN ISO 3104:1996 and DIN 51900 standards. The engine experimental work was conducted on a four-cylinder, four -stroke, direct injection (DI) and turbocharged diesel engine by using rapeseed oil and normal diesel blends. Based on the experimental results, models were developed which have the capability to predict the 2 specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and thermal efficiency were analysed and it has been seen that for the neat biodiesel which its LHV is lower by 8% than diesel resulted in an increment of BSFC and thermal efficiency by 18% and 25% respectively.

Abstract-In order to reduce the dependency on fossil oil energy resources, the using of several energy resources in compression-ignition engine has been the target of attention of researchers. The major renewable alternative combustible species are methanol, biogas, ethanol, biodiesel, and hydrogen. Fusel oil is a by-product of bioethanol production during the fermentation process present one of the new alternative fuels for compression-ignition engine. The aim of this work is to experimentally investigate the effect of fusel oil -diesel blending on performance and emission in single cylinder compression ignition engines. The test achieved under 25 % engine load at five-engine speed 1200 to 2400 rpm with intervals of 300 rpm. The experimental results revealed that the engine indicted power and torque slightly decrease for F 2 0 compared with pure diesel, and the increment was happened in fuel consumption. Although diesel fuel yields, the highest volumetric efficiency and exhaust temperature. Moreover, the results showed CO 2 and CO were increased while the NOx emissions decrease with the use F 2 0. All the negative effects that happened in power and torque was because of the water content, low heating value, low cetane number for fusel oil.Index Terms-Fusel oil, NOx emissions, single cylinder engine, alternative fuels, engine performance.I.

RESUMENActualmente uno de los retos energéticos es la búsqueda de alternativas para suplir anticipadamente el futuro agotamiento del petróleo a nivel mundial, y que además sean favorables con el medio ambiente. En especial los biocombustibles se han convertido en una de las propuestas más favorables para cubrir las actuales demandas del petróleo. Los biocombustibles son producidos de organismos vivos o de subproductos metabólicos (orgánicos o de desechos alimentarios). En este artículo se presenta una aplicación particular de la nanofotónica en el marco de la interacción de la luz con la materia denominada espectroscopia Raman de señal magnificada. Como muestra de control se considera el biodiésel y su mezcla con diésel, la razón se debe a la necesidad de establecer métodos de análisis durante el proceso de producción que podrían servir como cuantificador del grado de integridad al ser mezclado con diesel.Palabras clave: Biocombustibles, biodiésel, SERS, espectroscopia Raman, nanofotónica, sensórica. ABSTRACT Currently one of the energetic challenges is to look for environmentally friendly alternatives that would fulfill in advance the future shortage of oil in the world. Especially, biofuels have turned into one of the most favorable proposals to overcome current demands of the oil. Biofuels are produced from living organisms or from metabolic by-products (organic or food waste products). In this paper a particular application of nanophotonics in the frame of the interaction between light and matter through SurfaceEnhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is addressed. As a test prove aBiodiésel sample is considered, the reason relies on the necessity to establish analysis procedures either to be performed during the production or as a quantifying tool to probe integrity during the blending process with diesel.
