Effect of cementitious amendment on the hydrogeological behavior of a surface paste tailings’ disposal

Abstract: Surface paste disposal (SPD) can be considered as an effective alternative technique for mine waste management. The technique consists of first removing upstream water (by thickening and/or filtration) from tailings, then depositing them at the surface in a paste-like state. These techniques allow for the recycling of water, limit risks related to the failure of dikes, and favor progressive mine site rehabilitation. However, there are, thus far, only a few studies on the environmental behavior of tailings depo… Show more

“…Nowadays, column tests which are used in the field of environmental geochemistry are used successfully for the leachability of stabilized materials. Column tests consist of submitting stabilized materials to natural weathering by deionized water [79,80]. There are no limitations related to disposal configuration, sample mass, liquid/solid ration, and time duration.…”

“…However, these waste materials pose significant challenges, mainly due to the highly heterogeneous spoil nature [2]. Finding the appropriate ways to manage them efficiently is a global priority challenging engineers, researchers, and communities, e.g., see [3]. In this context, advanced risk management methodology can support the planning of the revitalization process of post-mining heaps (Bialas 2022).…”
