Effect of Class III bone anchor treatment on airway

Abstract: Objectives: To compare airway volumes and minimum cross-section area changes of Class III patients treated with bone-anchored maxillary protraction (BAMP) versus untreated Class III controls. Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight consecutive skeletal Class III patients between the ages of 10 and 14 years (mean age, 11.9 years) were treated using Class III intermaxillary elastics and bilateral miniplates (two in the infra-zygomatic crests of the maxilla and two in the anterior mandible). The subjects had cone bea… Show more

“…Similar to this study, many other studies have evaluated skeletal parameters only (16,24), but Angle's Class III molar relationship is also often used to indicate Class III malocclusion (25,26). In this study, Angle Class III molar relationship was not considered as an inclusion criterion because it could be affected by extractions, high vestibule canines, and dental crowding (27).…”

“…Conventional orthopedic therapy for maxillary protraction (Facemask) is usually performed in early mixed dentition. Treatment results are usually limited and short-lived in patients, and there is a significant chance of relapse and return of reverse overjet once the mandibular growth is finished 14 15 In this case after the conclusion of orthopedic treatment and during the fixed orthodontic treatment, no change in overjet even during PHV could be detected.…”

“…Also, there have been studies on the maxillary protraction effects of such facemasks on pharyngeal airway dimensions [1618]. However, there are few articles comparing the effects of the SAFM and the TBFM on pharyngeal airway dimensions.…”
