Effect of coating type on the mechanical performance of warp-knitted fabrics and cement-based composites

Abstract: High-performance textiles are used for reinforcing concrete structural parts. This paper presents a technique for producing coated weft-inserted warp-knitted fabrics for concrete applications. Three types of reinforced fabrics differing in coating type and composed of alkali-resistant-glass rovings resulting in a cement composite matrix were produced. The investigated coatings include potassium silicate, carboxylated styrene butadiene rubber and epoxide. The mechanical properties of the developed fabrics and c… Show more

“…Indeed, the reduction of the mechanical performance of FRCM composites exposed to temperature over 80 • C was reported for epoxy pre-impregnated carbon fabrics [68]. In order to overcome this issue, some studies propose the application of inorganic coatings instead of polymer based coatings [63,[70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78]. Weichold at al.…”

“…The authors also report that large silica fume particles have a beneficial effect on the durability of the composite because of the pozzolanic reaction between the amorphous silica and the portlandite. Instead of silica fume particles Quadflieg et al, report the use of a potassium silicate dispersion for the impregnation of AR-glass fabric [71]. The inorganic coating was applied on the AR-glass fabric using a coating machine with roll-to-roll technique.…”

“…In addition, a 3D warp-knitted preform has been contemplated for employing in concrete structures [ 9 , 10 ]. Furthermore, several techniques, including pre-stressing, filament winding, pultrusion and hand lay-up were utilized for textile-reinforced concretes [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Many applications of textile-reinforced concretes were identified in civil engineering, including industrial floors, bridge decks, prefabricated panels and rehabilitation (connectors, jackets, confinement, wrapping, repairing, seismic retrofit and anchoring) [ 14 , 15 , 16 ].…”
