Effect of Coffee Consumption on Intraocular Pressure

Abstract: Intake of caffeinated beverage (>/=180 mg caffeine) may not be recommended for patients with normotensive glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

“…Since contact lens wear can affect the corneal surface, thickness and curvature (Liu & Pflugfelder, 2000), contact lens wearing subjects (n = 2) were instructed to discontinue contact lens use on the day of measurement. Caffeine intake has been shown to increase IOP (Avisar et al, 2002) and alcohol consumption has been shown to lower IOP (Houle & Grant, 1967). Since IOP can influence axial length measurements, all participants were instructed to avoid caffeine and alcohol from the evening before and on the measurement day.…”
