Effect of coupled graphene oxide on the sensitivity of surface plasmon resonance detection

Abstract: We investigated graphene-oxide-(GO-) coupled surface plasmon resonance (SPR) detection sensitivity for sandwiched antigen-antibody interaction between human and antihuman immunoglobulin G molecules. GO was prepared in a Langmuir-Blodgett solution on gold and dielectric surfaces. Theoretical and experimental data suggest that an increased dielectric spacer thickness reduces resonance shifts for GO-coupled SPR detection as dielectric properties of GO appear to prevail. In general, a metal-enhanced structure was … Show more

“…We point out that previous treatments of graphene as an isotropic medium is not accurate, and that the Kretschmann configuration is an excellent platform to measure anisotropic optical constant of 2D material and test 2D effective medium theory due to its strong normal near field on the surface. This picture of graphene as an effective medium is applicable to other atomically thin nanomaterials or layered structure such as such as graphene oxide (GO), reduced GO, transition metal dichalcogenides, 2D material-based nanocomposite or metamaterials, and helps to understand their electromagnetic responses and functionalities such as enhanced SPR sensitivity [33,34,[77][78][79][80][81][82][83].…”

“…In 2014, Ryu et al also investigated the effect of GO on SPR sensitivity through simulations and experiments on structures composed of gold, GO, and SiO2 as a spacer layer between gold and GO. The results obtained show that the SPR biosensor coupled with GO has an SPR angle shift of 13% than the conventional structure [35]. Another method that can be used to improve the performance of the SPR biosensor is long-range surface plasmon resonance (LRSPR).…”

“…plasmonic sensing platforms have been proposed, such as graphene/gold, [7][8][9][10] graphene oxide/gold, [11][12][13][14][15] graphene-MoS2/gold [16][17][18] and MX2/silicon/gold. [19] However, most of these studies are preliminary theoretical investigations.…”
