Effect of detasseling on baby corn, green ear and grain yield of two maize hybrids

Abstract: M aize is a monoecious plant, with staminate flowers born on an apical inflorescence (tassel) and with pistilated flowers produced on one or more lateral branches, which develop into grain-bearing rachises (ears). In both tassel and ear flowers, a pair of stamens arises opposite the lemmas and a third stamen initiates later at right angles to the first pair but from a point on the meristem below its MOREIRA JN; SILVA PSL; SILVA KMB; DOMBROSKI JLD; CASTRO RS. 2010. “…Prolificacy is an important trait for baby corn cultivation, as more harvest can be achieved per plant, thereby can potentially increase farmers’ income (Moreira, Silva, Silva, Dombroski, & Castro, ). Typically, three types of prolificacy are observed in maize.…”

“…At the R3 stage of corn, all the ears of the useful area of the plot were harvested and evaluated for total and marketable yield of unkusked ears.Unhusked ears are considered to be marketable when their length exceeds 0.15 m, according to Moreira et al (2010), and their average diameter is 0.04 m, and they are ripe and free from injuries caused by insect pests and diseases. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and the means were compared by the Scott-Knott test at 5% probability.…”

“…Potassium fertilization increases thousand grains weight in maize [20]. Detasseling can increases the grains weight because it reduces the antagonism for leaf made materials and nutrients between male and female parts [15]. Grain yield (kg ha -1 ) Grain yield (kg ha -1 ) was significantly affected by detasseling, potassium levels and interaction of detasseling and potassium.…”

“…The highest soil potassium content values occur when the nitrogen fertilizer does not apply. Detasseling significantly increased the ear total number and ear total weight and contributed more to final grain yield [15]. Soil and climatic conditions of Pakistan are suitable for maize growing, however optimum fertilizers and management practices are pre-requisite for its production.…”
